history:

Dr. Mordin Solus was born in 2150. Salarians mature quickly (he mentions at one point his nephew already had tenure at a university at 16 years old) and sometime in his middle teens he joined the salarian Special Tasks Group. The STG is a group of elite soldiers, similar to Spectres (and in fact the inspiration for them), that monitor situations and take whatever action they believe to be necessary to resolve the situation, sometimes without paying attention to traditional laws.

The length of time Mordin spent with the STG before he retired is unclear, as is the number of missions that he may have completed or taken part in, however his final mission before he left was likely the most important one in his career.

Serving under Captain Kirrahe, he and a small group of soldiers traveled to Tuchanka, the Krogan home world to do soil readings and study the population growth of the Krogan in order to be certain the genophage was still effective. These studies revealed that the Krogan were naturally adapting to the virus and it was decided to design a new genophage that would limit reproduction to 1 in 1000 births resulting in a viable life.

With help from other top level scientists, Mordin developed the new version of the genophage and was assigned as specialist on a mission to disperse it to food and water sources on Tuchanka. This was done in a series of missions on different areas of the planet and on one drop the team ran into difficulties. They were discovered by a group of Krogan from clan Weryloc and ended up being forced into killing them all. In the process Mordin was injured, one of his cranial horns was chopped off and he still bears numerous facial scars as a result.

The team disbanded when the mission was finished and Mordin moved on to open a clinic in a problem area of Omega. Even though he disliked mechs, he pulled strings with the STG so the clinic would have some kind of defense even though he was more than capable of dealing with any of the mercenaries that threatened the clinic and gained quite the reputation from it. During his few years, he still returned to Tuchanka yearly to be sure that his fix was continuing to work and thus far, it seems to be doing the job.

Mordin was in his clinic on Omega in a quarantined zone, battling the effects of a plague that was decimating the population of the zone when Commander John Shepard showed up to recruit him. In the midst of treating patients, Mordin found a cure for the plague and was distributing it to anyone who showed up at the clinic. At first, he turned down the Commander’s request to join his squad. He was too busy helping people but when the Blue Sun mercenaries shut of the environmental systems Mordin agreed to join so long as Shepard distributed the plague cure and brought the systems back online.

As Shepard was leaving, Mordin asked him to keep his eye out for his assistant, who had gone deeper into the zone to disperse the cure to people too sick to seek out the clinic. He also gave Shepard a pistol lifted off of one of the Blue Suns he previously took out. Mordin continued to treat patients until Shepard was successful in both restoring the systems and aiding the doctor’s assistant Daniel.

The salarian mainly stayed within the confines of the Normandy, studying the Collector data and tissue. As Shepard requested, he found an antidote to the poison the Collector Swarm used to freeze people and was responsible for overseeing any weapons, armor and ability upgrades. Otherwise he assisted the Commander as the other requested, accompanying him on various missions.

After the attack and subsequent mission on Horizon, Mordin learned that his former colleague and student, Maelon, was captured by Blood Pack mercenaries and taken to Tuchanka. There they first speak briefly with Wrex, who took up position as clan leader in the two years since Shepard ‘died’ and he gave them some information on where to find the Blood Pack.

They were offered a truck for the drive out to the hospital and were forced to fight their way through it. Along the way, Mordin revealed that he never used live subjects and never experimented on any species capable of Calculus. They discover a dead krogan female and Mordin explained his reasoning about the genophage to Shepard, though he appeared upset at the waste of life.

They found the Urdnot scout that was missing and Shepard convinced him to go back to the female camp. Most of the Blood Pack was dispatched on their trip through the hospital and in one of the large labs the team found Maelon. It turned out that the other actually wasn’t a victim of kidnapping and was actually there of his own accord. Mordin was shocked and outraged because of his protégé’s methods and was pushed to the point of attacking Maelon, actually drawing a gun on him.

Shepard intervened, keeping Mordin from killing Maelon and sent the other salarian on his way. After a brief discussion, it was decided to keep the data just in case they needed it later. The missions progressed afterwards and The Illusive Man pointed Shepard towards a Reaper IFF, the final key they needed to get through the Omega 4 relay.

Just before they go through, Mordin called his favorite nephew just to get a bearing on what he personally was fighting for and was happy to hear his voice. He said the universe was too easy to depersonalize and the familial connection was necessary.

Once through the relay, the Normandy was shot down and Shepard laid out a plan. Mordin accompanied him until they reached the rest of the crew, kidnapped by the collector’s, and he was sent with them to escort them back to the Normandy.

He’s yanked from his universe, into this one, just as he steps foot back on the ship.

personality:

First and foremost, Mordin is a scientist. Particularly he’s a notable geneticist but he also practices medicine and has an extensive biological science background, at one point in time he was a professor at a university. In other words, Dr. Mordin Solus is a genius. He is always thinking about something: how it works, what its purpose is and whether he can improve it. His specialty lends itself to finding cures for diseases but he’s also capable of making tech upgrades. His abilities with tech are further illustrated in that he built his omni-tool himself, from scratch.

His thoughts are very fast and he easily moves from one subject to another without any pause at all. Since he thinks fast, he talks fast and this is true of most salarians but Mordin often appears to be faster than most. His attempts to slow down for other people to follow along often last only several seconds and then he reverts back to his quick pace.

Mordin is generally friendly and easy to talk to, unless you’re threatening his patients or otherwise attacking him. He’s consequentialistic, which means that he believes that the end justifies the means and that the right decision is the one with the best outcome for everyone. His decisions are based on logic, and simulations, not on what his own feelings or conscience says is the right thing to do. Mordin thinks in the big picture, what will be best for everyone from every perspective possible and will defend his actions almost stubbornly because he believes he has run enough data that he doesn’t doubt that his choice was absolutely the best option.

When he’s working, he tends to focus completely on what he’s doing and it can often be difficult to get him to pay attention long enough to have a conversation but he does make time between data-runs or while he waits for experiments to complete. If someone interrupts him, he’s likely to ask them to come back later unless it’s something absolutely critical. Unfortunately (for anyone else), he’s always working on something so getting his attention could be difficult

As a member of the Special Tasks Group, he learned how to take care of himself when it came down to a fight. He would prefer to avoid it if possible and to take the stealthy option, but if there’s no other choice he can easily take out a group of mercenaries or other enemy. Mordin doesn’t have the typical doctor mindset in this department. He believes that there are a multitude of ways to help people, either through medicine or killing people who are causing problems and has killed people many different ways (Gunfire, knives, drugs, tech attacks and once with farming equipment) Aria told Shepard that he was “Just as likely to shoot you, as heal you.”

He knows a great deal about genetics and anatomy and it isn’t limited to just salarians or krogan. He has shown knowledge of human, batarian, turian and drell physiology as well. It can be assumed that he likely knows about other races as well. Mordin has also shown knowledge of customs and idioms from other languages, likely because he has a photographic memory and this allows him to never forget anything, especially facts that he might stumble upon.

Emotionally, Mordin adapts quickly. Salarian lives are short, not more than 40 years, and they’re highly intelligent. This allows them to work through unpleasant situations or emotions quickly. He’s not immune to feelings; he simply processes them quickly. For example, Mordin could likely go through all the stages of grief in a matter of hours. He claims to be incapable of the emotional attachment that comes with courtship or a long-term relationship but whether this is true or just societal convention is uncertain.

After his work on the genophage, Mordin did some soul searching and had a crisis of faith. Ultimately, his religious beliefs rely on the Wheel of Life which he describes as similar to hinduism’s belief in reincarnation. Every one dies and then is born again to fix the mistakes they made in this life, in the next.

In his very little spare time, Mordin has been known to show negligible interest in the arts and has even ‘sang a little’. He performed Gilbert and Sullivan in a multispecies production, mostly so he could learn something about culture, and is actually a talented singer.

abilities/powers:

Mordin is proficient in the use of both submachine guns (his preference being the M-12 Locust) and heavy pistols (his preference being the M-5 Phalanx). He has the ability and the know-how to perform upgrades to these weapons, with time it is possible he could recreate them, provided he had the proper tools.

Note: All of the following abilities require Mordin’s omni-tool to use. Upon entering Abax, he will not have this, however, Mordin built his own omni-tool and it follows that he would recreate it at the earliest possible convenience.

Incinerate, Rank 3, is a high-explosive plasma round that inflicts damage in a burst radius of 1.20 meters, over a period of 3 seconds and not only damges enemies but also permanently stops their regeneration (if they’re capable of it).

Full Cryo Blast, Rant 4, is a shot of super-cooled subatomic particles that snap-freeze a target with a radius of 3.00 meters for approximately 5 seconds.

Neural Shock, Rank 3, affects an organic enemy’s nervous system and paralyzes them for a duration of 9 seconds.

first person sample:

Practice makes perfect. Human ideaology, intriguing theory. However, must be perfect to begin with. Otherwise, only succeed in replication of learned mistakes. Have things to do instead. Experimental research. Data collection. Defeating Reaper threat.

[Inhale]

Still, have brought me here already. Opportunity should not be wasted. Mulitple universes, plethora of muns. Will likely not find better.

third person sample:

Landing on Tuchanka is never easy, between the krogan patrols and the landscape it’s actually rather treacherous. That had never stopped him before, but he appreciates that the Commander had let him slip away to collect the samples he needs before they leave the arid, krogan home world.

These trips are necessary, both as a reminder of the lives he’s affected and confirmation that the modified genophage is still functioning correctly. Shepard might doubt, might disagree with the methods, but the simulations hadn’t lied and he had run thousands of them just to be certain. Nothing had been overlooked, nothing. The krogan would have overpowered them all, would have killed millions, would have caused the genocide of a hundred races and Mordin had refused to let that happen.

He crouches by a large boulder, pistol drawn as he waits for a couple members of Clan Jurdon to pass. Urdnot is tolerant of him being here, barely. It’s likely only because he is a member of Shepard’s crew and no one would cross Wrex when it came to the Commander but the enemies of Clan Urdnot wouldn’t take kindly to a salarian snooping around.

Mordin has nothing personal against the krogan, but they can’t be allowed to run rampant in the galaxy. They are far too dangerous for that. Too overpowered. He slips from his hiding spot, starting quietly across the flats towards the water supply he knows lies just beyond the ridge and is only lightly guarded.

Rounding a corner, he throws himself to the side just in time to keep himself from being eaten by one of the more predatory fauna on Tuchanka. He warily slips through the rocky cropping again, pistol trained on the plant and he mentally catalogues it as similar to Earth’s Nepenthes rajah. If he had more time, he might take a sample, but he doesn’t and that’s not what he’s here for so unfortunately it gets left where it is.

Instead, he continues down the path to the water. Checking for krogan, he crouches to fill a beaker and replaces it in his pocket. The high shrill of an alarm goes off, voices shouting and he distinctively hears ‘salarian’ drift across the water towards him.

He’s up and in motion within seconds, back up the path through the rocks. They will provide the cover he needs until he’s picked up. Mordin chooses a waist level boulder to crouch behind and switches his pistol for his submachine gun, then levels it at the closest krogan and fills him full of bullets.

Popping out the thermal clip, he replaces it and opens a communication line, “Shepard. Have been spotted. Problematic. Request pick-up immediately.”
