Seeing an article on the pay "freeze" or "voluntary payback" for the councillors of Toronto made me think of my Roman Empire course. In those days, the local elite would not get paid for doing their magisterial duties, but some would do it anyways for the prestige. Of course, then it was only open to the rich because they could afford to.
Someone commented that in St. Catherine's, they don't get paid. I wonder if that's how it works there.
I also saw the articles about the crazy stuff going on in Vaughan. Giant fight between the mayor and the councillors, with some sort of cliquish spat and corruption rampant throughout. Small-town politics, eh?
It all is kind of sickening, like high school all over again. University politics seem to be the same old thing, but with a big dash of left wing thrown in. It's even more fun when someone asks who's going to work the extra shift for their mom.
