The Green Mile is a novel by Stephen King which won Bram Stoker Award at year 1997. Originally it was series of six smaller books, but now they can be found in one fused book (Denver Science Fiction & Fantasy Book Club). Following up the book, Frank Darabont directed a movie the Green Miles. David Valdes helped Frank Darabont for production for the movie (The Green Mile Cast and Credit - Yahoo! Movies).

The character I was assigned to analyze was named Brutus Howell and often called Brutal, was portrayed by David Morse. Actor David Morse was raised in Hamilton, MA, and started acting career soon after his high school years. He made his debut at Boston Repertory Theater in 1971, and from that point he starred over 30 productions. Also he co-starred with famous actors such as Russell Crowe and Tom Hanks. (David Morse Biography - Yahoo! Movies)

The Green Mile is a memory of Paul Edgecombe that has been kept for decades. When Paul was younger, he was a death row prison guard and very interesting characters enter his life. Brutus’ role in the movie is prison guard with Paul. Brutus has a very short-nearly shaved and blonde hair. He also has slight bit of facial shade and his body is very well built. He is the tallest and biggest of the prison guards in block E and his physical strength matches it as well. When Wild Bill was choking Barry Pepper, Brutus knocked Wild Bill straight to the floor with one blow.

Despite his nick name “Brutal,” he is a very caring man. Because of Delacroix was worried about Mr. Jingles, Brutus makes up a story about Mouse Ville and Mouse University. He is constantly worried about the consequences and looks ahead of plan’s backfire. He was concerned that John Coffey may try to escape; also he was worried that Paul may fall into trap when Paul grabs John’s hand. Due to his perceptiveness, he controls his emotions very well, but when he snaps, he is jumps into action without words. Even when he is very enraged, he is very obedient to his fellow co-workers with exception of Percy. When Percy brought revenge and put Delacroix into most gruesome death, Brutus punched him right after the execution. Then when Paul asked him to stop, he stopped. He always respected death, and whenever Percy mocked the dead, Brutus always stood up for them.

Because Brutus was willing to stand up for the weak, the inmates did not dislike him, except for Wild Bill. Inmates did not have problem with Brutus, and Brutus went along well with co-workers. Paul always had Brutus by his side, and Brutus would help Paul even to the degree for drugging Wild Bill. He was that loyal to his co-workers. However, he did have problems with Percy, because Percy’s disrespectful attitude and selfish arrogance. Brutal was willing to bring revenge to Percy.

Personally, Brutus Howell is my favorite character out of the entire movie. He was strong, had a good sense of humor, and top of all that, he was very perceptive. Brutus’ concerns for others really drew me to the character, and his willingness to help is an exceptional quality. He is a general good guy that everyone would want to make a friend with. Throughout the movie, he was always helping character and that is a very honorable quality. Overall, he was a very interesting character that worked on the sideline of the movie, but he carried out very vital part of the movie.
