Guess who just set the land-speed record for going onto domestic sick leave as quickly as possible after coming off maternity leave? Today was MiniJ's first day at creche. Tomorrow I was to return to work.
2.45 today the phone rings. "Hi, this is the creche. I'm afraid MiniJ has conjunctivitis, please come and pick him up."
Sigh.
So, because I haven't written in a while again, in an effort to kick-start some creative juices, I wound up tackling a meme I grabbed from vikki:
1. Write down the names of 10 characters.
2. Write a fic of fifteen words or less whatever length damn well pleases you for every prompt, using the characters determined by the numbers. Do NOT read the prompts before you do step 1.
1) Roronoa Zoro (One Piece)
2) Zack Fair (Final Fantasy 7 and various offshoots)
3) Watanuki Kimihiro (xxxholic)
4) Edward Elric (Fullmetal Alchemist)
5) Kenpachi Zaraki (Bleach)
6) Ichihara Yuuko (xxxholic)
7) Koiwai Yotsuba (Yotsuba)
8) Nico Robin (One Piece)
9) Kendappa-oh (RG Veda)
10) Yin (Darker than Black)
Okay, I will admit to tampering with the characters to the extent that I decided I wanted a fair mix of male and female characters. And then I decided to take the meerkats out (don't ask). So here's the best I can do.
First Time: 4 and 6 (Edward Elric and Ichihara Yuuko, argh, my brain)
"How the hell is this equivalent exchange for anything?" Ed panted.
"You were willing to pay the price," Yuuko reminded him, with a smirk.
Angst, 7 (Koiwai Yostuba... what??? ANY OTHER CHARACTER WOULD HAVE BEEN BETTER!!!)
"And then I waved my wand and I did the magic fairy dance with everything I had, but the kitty still wouldn't wake up! Daddy, I need more magic!!!"
AU, 1 and 8 (Roronoa Zoro and Nico Robin, and the AU is inspired by some of the amazing pics on one of the OP communities recently)
"Does it ever bother you that people don't think you can achieve your dream just because you're a woman?" Robin asked one night.
"Does it ever bother you that people think you can be led around by the nose just because you're a man?" Zoro retorted.
Threesome, 3, 6, and 9 (Watanuki Kimihiro, Ichihara Yuuko and Kendappa-oh... yeesh)
"I hate my life," Watanuki moaned. Above his head, Kendappa-oh and Yuuko exchanged identical mock-innocent smiles.
Hurt/Comfort, 5 and 10 (Kenpachi Zaraki and Yin???? This is just not going to work)
The man had been bleeding when she found him, so she attempted to clean him up. Death was so messy.
Zaraki cracked an eyelid and gave her a hard look. "Fucking help me up, why don't you?"
Crack, 1 (Roronoa Zoro and unfair, One Piece is already crack. Oh wait, you mean like break.)
Zoro feels his two unnamed swords crack and shatter in the wake of Mihawk's attack. The position of first has never seemed so far away, but at least Wadou is still with him as he turns to face his death head-on.
Horror, 10 (Yin, umm)
Yin thought nothing of the monster, until it asked for a magazine and did not have correct change.
Baby!fic, 5 and 9 (Kenpachi Zaraki and Kendappa-oh and that's too horrifying to contemplate, yet I did)
Their carers joked that they'd had to take their rattles to prevent them "duelling" in the cot. It wasn't until years later that they realised that that was exactly what they had been doing.
Dark, 2 and 8 (Zack Fair and Nico Robin)
Robin examines the gauges on the machines and then looks at the specimen. It's healthy, but its companion...
Sighing, she pushes the button to terminate the experiment.
Romance, 4 and 7 (Edward Elric and Koiwai Yotsuba and I am so not going there)
Yotsuba decorates Ed's hair with flowers, and promises to marry him someday.
He thinks of Nina and leaves them there.
(Author's crack note: And meanwhile somewhere in the background Koiwai and Jumbo are doing ridiculous karate-style poses against Armstrong... and winning.)
(Even more crack note: At least until he takes off his shorts and puts them on his head.)

Looking at the blank eyes behind broken glasses hurts even more than the sword currently buried in his guts, bleeding his life away.
Again he's failed to save an innocent.
