Erk! Thanks for the concern my loves. I'm alright!
After pulling my insides out onto my outsides with trauma over money my life suddenly got much better! Well, I mean I suddenly stopped feeling sorry for myself. The better-ness began when I went to derby practice that evening. Usually kind of a pain on Tuesday nights; I skate like a sea cow after a day of work. That night on my way to pracki, all thundercloud on my brow and lighting cracking into my forehead, a bus driver (no less!) gave me a discount on my bus ticket (I am more impressed by this than anyone on whom I have since forced this anecdote). Then, when I got to prac, at least half the rollergirls skated past me with big grins and loud welcomes! Then, after pracki, a rollergirl drove me back to the station.
The next day O had scored a £50 meal voucher for some far-off pub. We got on our bikes and cycled and chattered all the way there. We ate a three course meal with wine for no £, and then cycled tipsily back home. O had no lights, so she wore the high visibility waistcoat given to me by Aapola, and I used my lights. Only one of my lights works properly, the batteries ran out in the other one, oops!
The following day I was to go down to my beloved London (and 18 months ago I disliked London! So reactionary!). I was so excited when I woke up, alone in my bed and alone in my flat, that I said out loud, "Is it today?! Is it today!?" Ha ha silly fool.
Well. It *was* that day! The sun was amazing. I biked to the other side of Hull to visit a family history group 'n biked back in the sunshine. Ate lunch in my little house and threw some roller derby stuff and other nonsense at my bag. I left. And then realised I didn't have my helmet! Fail! Went back and got it. And then tra-la-laaaaaaa'd on the train to London.
In London I skippedydoodahh'd to Shepherd's Bush Empire to meet Luko (yay!!) for Fever Ray (YAYYYY!!) for free (GSIUWONZWIU!!!!).
The heavens opened and dropped what used to be an iceberg on our heads. Wet. Funny. Oh this is when I met a couple of the Aus's friends. One of them smiled at me out of the corner of his mouth. He looked as though he were recording all details of our meeting for recounting later. I don't think I'm wrong there.
After a breakfast meeting with the dark heart of London, Mward, I pushed the capital's boundaries to visit my lovely family who fed me chips. I have a new little nephew who is very sweet and smiley. My older nephew is five now and just got his first school report ever. His school teacher is a massive fan. The school report was three pages long. She used the word 'amazing' a handful of times, lots of !s and a good part of it was made up of direct quotations from him. The most hilarious school report I have ever read. I think my favourite part is either where he gave the class an impromptu breakdancing demo, or the part where he explained how the physics of helicopters works. There was also something about his opinions of Gordon Brown as well?? He is going to be so embarrassed about this when he's older.
That evening The Aus and I ate noodles in a former bath house and then went to see 'Moon'. Utterly fantastic film and soundtrack. Incredible - I was fully absorbed. The soundtrack worked so well with the story. The small intimate cinema (Screen on the Green) added to the conflicting feelings of solitude and claustrophobia created by the film's subject and music.
Next day, next day... the first ever European Roller Derby tournament. First ever! Dumb ass signal failures on the rubbish district line tube meant I ran into Earls Court, yelling at everyone "WHERE DO I GO?!?!?" pulled skates on, smeared lipstick across my face, and rolled straight onto the track to knock rollergirls over.
My team did so good! We didn't win either of our matches, but we've certainly learned a lot. It was so much fun skating at Roll Britannia, especially against the rock hard Berlin Bombshells team. At times that weekend, watching the other teams, I felt overwhelmed with derby love. Wow I need to sort out my blood-sugar crapola however. I can't party after derby! Weak! The Aus and I watched a
silly film about Hell or something on Sunday night on his mac. On Monday I went to see
this absolutely amazing (and free!) exhibition at the V&A with a fantastic young lady who used to volunteer with me. I highly recommend this exhibition. It filled me with "yeauch" "eeek" and "oooooh". Later, en route to Kings X for the train back to Hull, I had lunch with my friend who works for Central Government. Always good to catch up with that angel.
So. You know. Fun times yo.
Oh yes. And I have a strict budget now. I have jettisoned all frippery. I may not get to go back to London for yonks. I can only go to one derby pracki a week for a while. Yeouch.
