Iraniamania..!

Jul 02, 2006 23:52

For a couple of weeks now I've been gathering up some music from Iran, because I had found a website when I was poking around the internet at work that had a BUNCH of artists and songs to download, and it's just taken me a while to go through them all.

A lot of the tracks that the site had up were in real media format, and I really didn't feel like downloading real player, so half the sifting was for mp3s, then after that, finding stuff that I actually liked. XD If I had to guess, I'd say about 70% of the artists were from the seventies. Fortunate for you all, though, I just uploaded the best I found from that decade.

Anyway, the music. Please right click, save as these!

127.

127 is an Iranian 5 piece band -- guitar, piano, trombone, bass and drums -- with roots in Iranian melodies and jazz with an alternative sound. The band was to perform at the SXSW 2005 Music Festival in Austin, Texas, on March 19th, but was not able to because of U.S. visa restrictions.

They honestly remind me of Bob Dylan. Or maybe just this song does. I've not really downloaded any more of their stuff.... but these lyrics are great! XD

My Sweet Little Terrorist Song

Ashkan G

Ashkan G is someone I know absolutely nothing about, and this is the only song I was able to find for download by him. It's a song about Mahamoud Ahmadinejaad, as if you couldn't tell by the name, and since I don't know the language, I have no idea if this is a pro or anti song.

It's good nonetheless, though!

Haale.

Born in New York City, Haale weaves Persian melodies and Sufi-inspired lyrics through a soundscape of tribal beats, sci-fi sonic guitars, and a twanging setar. Drawing on her Persian and urban American roots, she brings audiences into the ecstatic and electric space where the two worlds meet. GLOBAL RHYTHM has already acknowledged her impact, naming her "One of 15 artists sure to make big waves in the future...This genre-bending seamstress will make you see stars while ascending to her own."

In the unique space that vocal talents such as the Cocteau Twins, Sigur Ros, and Manu Chao explore, Haale's vocal powers lie in a world without political and ethnic borders as she mixes languages while creating her own unique expression. Her music is epic: in a world between Zeppelin and Haydeeh, Radiohead, T-Rex, and Omme Kalsoum. "Haale summoned and harnessed some of the madness of a distant desert moon...her Sufi-inspired music with rapid staccato drums and her soaring voice singing the words of the ancient Persian poet Rumi called upon the ageless magic of the moon as the sun set and the winds rose from the West in approval..."

Mehrdad Arabi.
Ah, and now some classical! I don't really know anything about this artist, but this song is a sixteen minute and thirteen second long composition filled with slow parts that lead into fast parts with crazy drums and some other instruments. >_> Sorry, I'm not feeling too wordy tonight (like I am any other time!) :X

Nima Chehrazi.
Back to pop..! I really like this guy's voice, but don't know much about him either, since his website is still under construction. CHECK OUT THAT HAIR, THOUGH!

Bakhtiari

Niyaz.

Known collectively as Niyaz, the trio's first eponymous release is a hypnotic, ecstatic, and eminently danceable album that represents the best of both traditional world music and electronic music.

For these three artists, Niyaz represents a real departure from their usual avenues of artistic expression. Their first joint album weaves together ten beautiful, mystical poems written by some of the greatest Sufi poets of all time, with music accessible to a contemporary audience.

Azam, who was born in Iran but largely raised in India, sings in both Farsi (the Persian language) as well as in Urdu, a language widely spoken in India and in Pakistan. The music, too, represents cultural blendings of the highest order, crossing back and forth over centuries of musical expression to combine ancient instruments, rhythms, and tonalities with brand new sounds.

Pouyan Abdoli.
Poyan Abdoli is educated as a classical tar player, but can also play the drum tombak, and the water flute ney. Brought up in a family of Iranian singers, Abdoli has studied with Iranian masters since he was eight and decided at an early age to become a musician himself.

Abdoli has developed his music in many directions, among them towards improvisations open to other influences than those set by the origin of his training and instruments. Based in Norway for the last six years, he has performed widely here, but also in Sweden, England.

Today, Abdoli is the leader of a band called "Psychosofi". In addition, in 2003, he released a CD with the Indian-born tabla player Jai Shankar, thus facilitating an exiled encounter of traditional Iranian and traditional Indian music.

Ramesh.

SHE'S FROM THE SEVENTIES. I could only find two songs from the bunch that I actually could listen to, but be warned that the sound is sorta messed up, like it's been salvaged from an old recording.

Look at that outfit. XD I think that's part of the reason I like her.
