Title: I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings
Author: Maya Angelou
My Grade: B+

To be honest, I never had any interest in reading Maya Angelou. I can't explain why, I just didn't. For some reason, I decided to sit down and read this book while hanging out at the bookstore one boring day. I think I was finally tempted because I knew it was often challenged / banned (#3 of the most frequently challenged books of 1990 - 2000). I was surprised how easy it was to read. Now of course, she came from a very poor and at time tragic childhood (living in the segregated South, divorced parents, rape, etc.), and it was heartbreaking at time. But what I mean by "easy" was that it read more like a novel than a memoir to me. I wasn't expecting that at all. I'm not sure if I'll continue to read her other books, this is only the first of many memoirs she's written. But I'm glad I read this one.
