Summary: It was always dark in the evergreen forest surrounding the village and everyone knew that. They were smart enough to avoid walking alone at night, knowing that the big bad wolf would come after them. But curious little Taemin couldn't help himself but to have a little adventure one night. Not believing in those myths and whatnot, he ventured through he forest with a hum serenading the dark trees around him. What he didn't expect was that a pair of bright yellow eyes was following him through the night.
'Oh! Grandmother,' she said, 'what big ears you have!'
'All the better to hear you with, my child,' was the reply.
'But, grandmother, what big eyes you have!' she said.
'All the better to see you with, my dear.' '
But, grandmother, what large hands you have!'
'All the better to hug you with.'
'Oh! but, grandmother, what a terrible big mouth you have!'
'All the better to eat you with!' And scarcely had the wolf said this, than with one bound he was out of bed and swallowed up Red Riding Hood.
"Oh no!" one of the children screamed, placing her hands on her eyes as the children around Kibum held onto his pants even tighter. Taemin just rolled his eyes, he's off with that story again, he thought to himself, hearing more gasps from the children that surrounded the beds.
"When the wolf had appeased his appetite, he lay down again in the bed, fell asleep and began to snore very loud," Kibum said even louder, the kids around him huddled together, squealing when Kibum immitated a wolf 'snoring'
"And speaking of bed, it's time for all of you to go to sleep, no?" Kibum teased, scooting the children off his bed as they all groaned. "But Kibum hyung! I want to know what happened next!"
"Yeah!"
"We wanna hear it."
"Please hyuuungg~"
The children in the orphanaged begged him, giving him their best puppy eyes but Kibum just shook his head. "It's passed midnight and you all know what happens after midnight don't you?" The kids shook their heads, walking closer to the older boy, eager to know what happens after midnight. Kibum asked the children to come closer, looking around skeptically before giving them his answer. "The big bad wolf comes out at night and eats little children at night."
The children around him gasped, scrambing to their beds before pulling the covers above their shaking heads.
"Good night hyung."
"Yeah we're going to sleep early today."
A few of them faked a yawn before hiding under the blankets, obviously afraid that a wolf will come out at night and eat them, which was totally untrue. Taemin chuckled at how just one wolf could make them all go to sleep. Kibum smiled, kissing each and every child on their foreheads before closing the door behind him. "You know you shouldn't lie to them. And stop telling them those wolf stories, you know how it scares them."
"True. But how else am I going to get them to sleep?"
Taemin laughed. "True, true. But you do know those myths and stories aren't real right? About werewolfs and well, wolves in general. They've been extinct for the past thousand years," he continued, giving his brother a look that said 'they're going to find out sooner or later'. "I know, but they're children Taemin. They need to be given adventure and thrills. Isn't that what you used to say?"
"Yeah. I did. Until I realized that adventure and thrills wasn't what kept us living in this run down cottage in the middle of knowhere." he said, raising his voice as he stood up and pointed to their home. It wasn't much, just a small cottage with two bedrooms, one living room and a small kitchen. The two found it many years ago when they were exploring the town when they were kids. It was at the edge of town, right in front of the evergreen forest that shrouded the entire place. It was abandoned and lonely and it looked just sad. Rumours had it that a girl with a red hood lived there and was taken away by the wolf. Taemin scoffed at that rumour, knowing it wasn't true since wolves don't exist. They were just myths. Kibum was sceptical though, but after some consoling, he gave in. Soon after, the two moved into the isolated cottage. They took in a few kids as well, beggers and orphans from the streets because they knew how it felt. How it felt not having a family to take care of you and only having each other to hold onto.
"Oh come on Taemin. For one, it isn't in the middle of knowhere and secondly, the kids need adventure and fun in their life. It's the only time they can have it without being worried all the time. Look at you," he paused, cupping Taemin's face before he stared straight into his brother's eyes. "You used to be the sweetest kid around here. That Taemin would never say that about fun. Never." he smiled, trying to cheer the other up.
"Well hyung," the younger boy started as he sighed, pushing away Kibum's hands before continuing. "I'm not that kid anymore. Maybe I just... Grew up. And you should too hyung. It's time you grew up and left all these fairytales."
Kibum stayed silent, staring at the ground, his fist curled up in a ball. "No. I won't grow up. I won't deprive these kids of a wonderful childhood they could never relive," he growled, a tear sliding down his cheek. "I really thought you'd understand Taemin. Of all people. I thought you'd understand," he sighed, stomping off into their shared room before slamming the door, causing some dirt from the ceiling to fall onto the floor.
Taemin knew why he was angry. He was angry because he wasn't the Taemin that explored through every crack in this village with him. The same boy who insisted they snacked on some bread from the bakery before both of them got caught and ended up running into the arms of the dense forest, laughing at their thievery. The very same person who told him the stories about wolves and mythical creatures that no longer existed.
He sighed. "I need to clear my head from all this," he said to himself, ruffling his hair before grabbing his thin coat and rushing out into the woods. The forest has been like a second home for him. It gave him a sense of adrenaline everytime he entered it's never ending amount of trees. Best of all, it made him feel like a kid. A smile crept up on his face, he laughed a bit before he took off into his oasis from the village, from people. He denied it. Denied all the childish things he thought of and did when he was a kid. That's why he threw them all away and became the person he was today. Matured and stubbon Lee Taemin. But he couldn't help but put all those away and just be free. Be the person he loved to be. To be, Lee Taemin. In truth, he loved adventure and the adrenaline rush he'd get from being caught by someone whenever he did something mischevious.
Skipping deeper into the forest as he hummed a sweet tune, he didn't notice the pair of yellow eyes following him.
It was a full moon that night. The moon was beautiful as it shone it's beauty bright in the night sky. The moon always seemed to give him a calming sense. It made him.. Happy. He had no idea why, but it just did. Passing by a stream that flowed along the forest and into the village, he stopped for a bit, skipping on the rocks that made a small island in the stream. Following the path of rocks that lead him back the place he came from. His home. With a smile on his face, he went back into the arms of a warm house.
But soon enough, he stopped, hearing a rustling that came from one of the bushes behind the path. "W-Who's there?" he called out, afraid of what he might find as his slim fingers clutched the door frame. A squeak was heard before a small brown squirrel dashed it's way towards him before making a turn into another bush. Taemin yelped in fright, falling to the ground before chuckling at his silliness. "It's just a squirrel Taemin. A squirrel. Nothing to be afraid of," he smiled nervously, but secretly, he could hear breathing from behind the bush. Pushing that thought aside, thinking it was just his imagination playing tricks on him, he closed the door and went into his home.
The creature from behind the bushes howled, dashing off into the midnight forest, never to be seen again.
The boy, Lee Taemin, the adventure denied boy who thought wolves were extinct and never existed, was proved wrong. So very wrong.
