Waiting for Claire to explain the situation, Peter watched her interact with the boy named West.
An awkwardness hung between the two teens. This was not the sort of awkward that arose from meeting someone outside an online chatroom or the kind of awkward that comes from meeting distant friends. This awkwardness was bred from a relationship that had ended too soon, too painfully. There was a history here that Peter did not know but could see in the way they looked at each other: regretfully, tensely, bitterly, longingly.
Not for the first time that night, Peter felt completely alone.
