Music Meme, Day 15

Mar 15, 2011 22:52

Directions: EVERY DAY ANSWER ONE QUESTION AND POST A VIDEO OF THE SONG ON YOUR WALL. Label it as... Day 1, Day 2, Day 3, etc., then that day's question and the Artist and the Song title. HAVE FUN!! :D

Well, I'm rarely one to actually follow a meme's directions.
Looking over the original categories, I can't answer (or don't care) about half of them. So I think I'll go with a bit more free-form style of just picking 30-some-odd songs and writing up a bit about them.
I should say at the default that I have no particular musical tastes or knowledge. I listen to trashy pop most of the time. Still, I will make an attempt to pick reasonably good music.

Yesterday's post: Dr. Dre feat. Eminem and Skylar Grey, “I Need A Doctor”

Wait, strike that.

day 15 - a song that describes you -
I have no freaking idea. I'm gonna put this off until later.

Today will be...a musical post.
I recently got around to watching “Repo! The Genetic Opera.” it's an odd movie. I didn't hate it, and I didn't love it, but a couple of the songs were good.

So, yes, musicals.

Repo! The Genetic Opera Trailer
I'll start off with something that is not too spoiler-y.
Anthony Stewart-Head, “Legal Assassin”
I found myself most fond of the Repo Man himself, played by Anthony Stewart Head (probably best known for being Giles in Buffy, or possibly Uther in “Merlin” if you dig BBC dramas).
Oh, and he played Dr. Frank-N-Furter in a 90s stage version of Rocky Horror in London. (He looks pretty fine in stockings.)
This is his introductory song, pretty much laying out his character for the film.
I should not that, if you haven’t seen or heard of this film, it is gory. Gory as in, “directed by the man who directed Saw III, IV, and V.” If you're not a fan of blood, be very glad this song cuts out where it does.
Now, as I said, I wanted to avoid spoilers. If I were to pick a favorite song, it's have to go more towards
Alex Vega and Anthony Stewart-Head, “Let the Monster Rise”, a duet between Repo Man and his daughter, Shiloh, after she finds out...well, spoilers.

Most people tend to enjoy Terrance Zdunich, Alex Vega, Paris Hilton, Chorus, “Zydrate Anatomy” , which is awfully catchy, or Alex Vega and Sarah Brightman, “Chase The Morning”, which is rather haunting.

~Bonus~
As for the rest, hmm. I don't have a lot of interesting musicals, despite having been raised on Rogers and Hammerstein.

Little Shop of Horrors
Chorus, Rick Moranis, and Ellen Greene, “Skid Row (Downtown) [film version] or Broadway cast version
I'm terribly fond of this song. There's a real sense of desperation from the main characters.
I also have a secret desire to do an AMV with this song and “Michiko to Hatchin.” But video editing is not my forte.
On a random note, this soundtrack was composed by Alan Menken. As in, “The Little Mermaid,” “Beauty and the Beast,” “Aladdin,” “The Hunchback of Notre Dame,” and “Tangled,” among many others.

Phantom of the Opera
Now, the thing with musicals is, which version do you like? The original Broadway cast? The revival? The film?
I've definitely learned that with Phantom. Frankly, I'm really fond of the Canadian cast. A longshot, yes, but I enjoy their voices, and the more operatic styling of it all.
Colm Wilkinson, “Music of the Night”
This is just the version that does it for me. I mean, I listen to, say, Michael Crawford's version, and I just don't feel it. Wilkinson's version sounds much more pained to me, more desperate, and that fits more with my idea of the Phantom.

The Rocky Horror Picture Show
“Rose Tint My World” /“I'm Going Home” /“Superheroes”
I've heard that “Superheroes” was cut from one of the original American releases. Such a pity.
These three songs sort of sum up the allure of RHPS. “Rose Tint My World” has all the remaining characters reflect on what they've experienced-Brad's fear and Janet's absolute exhilaration at their new-found sexual freedom are both completely understandable. Frank-n-Furter palys the part of the temptor/ress, encouraging them to accept freedom, while...the German doctor (what's his name) begs them to cling to the world and morality they once knew. Frank-n-Furter then breaks our hearts by showing sincere tenderness and longing. There's this deep sense of exile, being cut off from home, that really gets to me. And, finally, “Sueprheroes” wraps it up fairly bleakly-outside of this liminal space of sexual freedom, Brad and Janet are changed, but whether or not their changes will allow them to return to the normal world is ambiguous.
Gorgeous trio.

Monty Python's Life of Brian
“Always look on the Bright Side of Life”
A cheerful song, sung by men as they die horribly crucified.
This song made people scream for the film to be banned. It's said to have been sung by soldiers as they ship sank and they waited for rescue. And it was the crowning moment of the funeral of one of the original Monty Python members (well, some people might argue that the crowning moment was having the first instance of “fuck” being said at a British funeral, but....)
Ah! Come to think of it, there's a “song for your funeral” a bit later down the list...
Also, this isn't really a musical. Technically, though, this song was remade for “Monty Python's Spamalot,” which is.

Wicked
Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth, “Defying Gravity”
Who doesn't like this song?
Oh, and these fan-made animation storyboard is pretty amazing.

Thank you for joining me for another long, yet woefully incomplete post.
