Series Title: Still hunt
Chapter: nine (PART TWO)
~

Daylight burned into his eyes, as it always did when he awoke. They’d been very sensitive to bright light as long as he could remember.

Except this time it was agony.

He whimpered slightly in pain, covering his left eye with his hand in an attempt to shield him from the daylight pouring in through the curtain. He rolled over onto his front, burying his face into the pillow. It was still wet from tears he had no recollection of crying.

In reality, it was more or less evening and Satoru hadn’t even wondered what time it was, except he believed he hadn’t been lying here much more than a few hours.

You-chan.

For a moment he had almost forgotten. And then everything came flooding back into his mind.

After You had left, everything that had happened had merged into a single blur in his memory. His memory was limited; he remembered the pain in his head from the hit, he remembered feeling dizzy and sitting down on their bed, and then nothing.

I must be concussed.

I need to get up and find you. But my head…

With all of his strength he forced himself up from the bed before shutting the curtains, still shielding his eye.

The bedroom plunged into a cold form of darkness, his surroundings just visible.

At least my eye won’t hurt as much.

Realising he was still wearing his yukata he changed into something more comfortable, trying his hardest not to even look at You’s side of the wardrobe as he searched for something to wear.

Eventually you will have to come back to pick up the rest of your belongings.

You’ve left everything here…

As soon as he had dressed himself, Satoru clambered over to the mirror which lay decoratively on the bedroom wall.

Inspecting the damage to his face, he noticed the dark almost purple bruise forming below and around his eye; his actual eye of course, remained too painful to open. Biting his lip, he forced it open, the cold air hitting it and stinging intensely, and with his other eye he could see just how bloodshot it was.

I’m sure it looks even worse in the light.

It worried him that he could barely see out of it. Satoru knew he should go to the hospital, he knew it was worth getting checked, but they’d want to know who hit him.

I don’t have time to go to the hospital, I have to find you.

He was frightened simply because he knew his chances of getting You to come back were small. He really had no idea where he was, or where he was going, or if he was even coming back. The reality of losing him hadn’t quite hit home yet; he wasn’t stable enough to deal with it.

The best I can do is apologise to you. I’ll take the blame for the mirror I’ll pretend it was me, I don’t care who did it. I just want you to come back.

He sat back down on the bed, reaching for the house phone on the side table.

Do you really think it is going to be as simple as a phone call?

I know I wouldn’t answer if I were You.

He dialled You’s number, waiting and waiting for him to answer.

It was at that moment, that he noticed the phone line seemed to be dead.

Is the power out?

Satoru checked the wiring on the phone cable.

He couldn’t see well enough, but in the darkness it looked cut…

He felt his heart pound away in his chest just a little faster. He reached across to turn the side lamp on to help his vision, only to find it wouldn’t. He got up from the bed, going to the light switch on the wall, only to find that too wouldn’t switch on.

The power is out.

What am I supposed to do? Go around to all the hotels in Tokyo?

He sat back down on the bed, burying his head in his hands in distress.  He felt overwhelmed with emotion and it only hurt to cry with eyes as sore as his, so as always, he held it all in and hoped it would go away.

You might not even be in Tokyo at all.

What if you went home?

It was then that he remembered he left his cell phone on the kitchen table, knowing it would work regardless of a power cut.

He left the bedroom to go and find it, noticing the whole of the apartment seemed to be in almost total darkness. There weren’t many windows, but all of them seemed to have the curtains closed, and of course there were no lights on as the power was out.

I don’t remember anyone shutting the curtains out here.

He navigated himself through the darkness, just being able to see a few feet in front of him. As he got to the kitchen table, he realised his cell phone was no longer there.

“For fucks sake-”

I’ll just have to go and find a fucking payphone.

I don’t care if someone sees my bruise, I have to find you.

He found his shoes by the door and hastily slipped them on, before reaching to open the front door.

“Where are you going?”

~

“여보세요?”

“Hello, is this Ae-cha-san speaking?”

“Yes, it is, who is this?”

“I don’t know if you remember me well, it’s Kurosaki-san,”

“Yes, I remember.”

“I don’t know how to put this, but I need to ask you about something.”

“What is it?”

“It’s about Satoru.”

“Satoru?”

“Yes,”

“I haven’t heard from him in a long time.”

“I-I know,”

“Is he well?”

“No, well, I don’t really know.”

“Oh.”

“Ae-cha-san, are you still living in Japan?”

“Yes,”

“Is there any way I could meet you soon? I need to talk to you about something in person,”
