“Rei....please....don’t”
He felt a sickening feeling rising in the pit of his stomach. He was fighting really hard to keep his face straight. He couldn’t cry, not right now, not when she needed someone strong by her side. Gently, he put his arms around her weak figure, which whimpered in pain at being shifted.
“Gomen Rei...”
Rei looked up at him and forced a painful smile. “No, I’m sorry, I should’ve stayed.....away....I...didnt...listen...to....urgh....”
Inoo stared in horror as Rei groaned and coughed out a massive amount of blood onto his shirt. Shaking, he tightened his arms. “Don’t talk Rei...I’ve called the ambulance...they will come soon. Just, hold on, please...”
She just lay there with her eyes shut in his arms. Inoo’s mind was running through her images, the memories of when she had walked onto his front door, and announced her arrival drenched in the rain. From that day onwards he had loathed her. He didn’t care that she loved him, that all she wanted was to be with him. During that time all he wanted was for her to disappear, to suffer, to be punished for ruining his life. For daring to walk into his home and relive that one sin committed by his father. But now, he wanted nothing more, but for her to be up again.
Rei coughed, but weakly pulled up her arms and tightened them around his waist.
“Ni chan...” she whispered feebly.
Inoo could not hold back the feeling much longer. There were furious amount of tears trailing down his face.
“Hai...” he replied softly.
She had followed him everywhere. The moment the bell would ring, he recalled running to the car to avoid her as she would come sprinting out from the junior high section to see him. To remind him every day that she had no family anymore aside from his. Just to convey her plea one more time, either by buying him a present, or making him a bento despite him having thrown away the previous ones.
“Rei...” Inoo cried silently and held her limp head against his lips.
He regretted yelling at her, but even more, he regretted doing it in public. Where people heard them, where his fans, and his psychopathic devotees heard them. How they had decided to end his demise; to end his misery, by ending the life of this 14 year old girl. His hands felt the bruises and cuts on her arms as he pulled the dead figure into a tight hug. The sirens echoed in the distance, there was a crowd rushing towards them, the sound of his name rang in the dark hall as people searched for him, worried why his call had come from this abandoned building. But he heard nothing, apart from a strange ringing in his ears.
His body now shook not with fear, but with anger, as he heard his own voice in his mind repeatedly saying the same thing, again and again,
“I will avenge her death....”
