Rich man, poor man

Cherry blossom High School is reputed not only for its good grades but also for the students or more particularly for their rich and famous parents. Ninety-nine percent of the students are from rich families; businessmen, traders, CEOs and even Prime Ministers. If there’s a high school you should attend in your life then it’s Cherry Blossom High School for sure.

Ohno Satoshi, 18 years-old, studies here and is well-known by the entire high school. He’s smart, talented, kind, handsome and more importantly he’s the son of the principal. Everyone respects him and adores him. Ohno Satoshi is the man you want as your best friend.

It’s not strange that the whole school knows every rumor about Satoshi, that’s why when a new student arrived and had to share Ohno’s room for one long year, everyone was spreading rumors about the new man. Is he the son of an international CEO? Or maybe he’s a prince from a faraway country? Whatever he is, that Aiba Masaki is someone very important.

“Hiiiiiiiiii!” Satoshi has a start as tall and slim young man enters suddenly in his room, screaming his strange greetings.

“You must be Ohno Satoshi, right? Nice to meet you, I’m Aiba Masaki.” Says the young man while shaking Ohno’s hand vigorously.

After only two hours, Ohno deduced that the new student was very energetic to say the least. He told Ohno everything about him, his family, his town, his friends, and even the three dogs and five street cats he had rescued. Even though, Ohno is well-known for liking silence, he can already tell that Aiba Masaki is indeed special.

Things start to get bad on the very first day of classes. Ohno and Aiba aren’t in the same class and despite the fact that the school is huge, the smallest rumor spreads quickly; so naturally when Aiba Masaki introduced himself as a commoner the whole school knew it even before the end of the first hour of class.

Ohno isn’t stupid, he knows why the other students are laughing loudly; they’re making fun of the new student, the poorer as they call him. Among the harsh comments, the one that shocked Ohno was certainly when they said that Aiba Masaki is in fact a homeless person whose Ohno’s father had accepted in his school as Satoshi’s pet. Ohno knows how people can be mean but he still doesn’t understand why and what’s fun in telling such stupid things. Do they even realize that it’s nonsense?

When Ohno enters his room by the end of the day he’s expecting to see a depressed Aiba, being the target of mean jokes isn’t very pleasant after all. However as soon as he crosses through the door he stands speechless as he watches Masaki bouncing on his bed, music playing loudly in the room. Ohno can’t help but smiles as he watches Aiba singing (sometimes out of tune) with all his might, the new student seems to have a nice time.

When Aiba notices Ohno’s presence he’s so surprised that he miss a step and fells on his back, fortunately the mattress broke his fall.

“I’m sorry,” Aiba apologizes as he turns off the music quickly.

Ohno shakes his head and closes the door behind him. “It’s okay, it’s funny to watch you.”

“I’m still excited by my first day, I needed to unwind.” He explains as he sits on his bed.

Ohno watches him for a long moment, Aiba feeling slightly uneasy suddenly. “What?” he asks Ohno.

“I’m sorry for being blunt but I thought you would feel more….depressed actually.” Ohno says straight.

“Depressed? Why?” Aiba asks, tilting his head slightly on the side.

“Well, the whole school his making fun of you, you know?”

“Oh!” With such an answer Aiba admit that he already knows. “At least I’m popular.” He smiles.

Ohno chuckles as he sits behind his desk and grabs a notebook from his schoolbag. “I wouldn’t say popular actually.”

“Only truth can hurt you know? It’s not because people say things about you that it’s true.” Aiba surprises Ohno by his seriousness suddenly.

“I mean, look at you. People say that you’re not talkative at all but I think you speak a lot.” He adds smiling brightly.

Ohno feeling shy suddenly prefers to hide his face behind his book and focuses on his homework.

Being inside the same room for a whole school year is the best way to make a true friend. You can fain and act cool when you’re surrounded by your classmate but there’s one person who you can’t hide your true self and this is certainly your roommate. Aiba and Ohno had become friends through the year; they laugh, talk to each other about school and private thing and they also help each other when one of them had trouble with a lesson. In one word they became best friends and as a best friend Ohno had a hard time to let the other student bad mouthing Aiba but he promised his friend that he wouldn’t do anything to stop it. ‘Let them talk’ Aiba had told him once. Nevertheless it hurts Satoshi to witness such a cold treatment, just because his friend isn’t as rich as them.

One day as Ohno walks towards his room he sees Masaki having a call in the corridor next to their room.

“Yeah mom. I miss you too.” Aiba smiles sadly.

“Hm? No I already told you it’s impossible. Don’t worry mom I’m not the only one staying here for the break. I’m fine…yes really.”

Ohno must feel ashamed to listen to such a private call but the fact that Aiba is staying at the school for Christmas catches his attention.

“I have a lot of friends! I’ll make good memories so don’t worry okay?”

Ohno frowns as he hears the big lie from his friend. Aiba’s mother doesn’t know that his dearest son is actually the target of mean jokes? And why is he staying here?

“I love you, bye!”

Aiba hungs up the phone and sighs heavily before crying softly. Ohno hides a little more behind the wall and listen carefully to Aiba’s every sounds. After a short moment he decides that it’s better if he keeps his friend company but to not put him into an embarrassing situation Ohno decides to fain that he’s only coming.

“Aiba-chan?” Ohno calls falsely surprised as he notices the tears on his friend’s face.

Aiba quickly wipes his tears and tries to smile but in Ohno’s eyes the smile is visibly fake. “Are you alright? Why are you crying?”

As always Aiba isn’t the type to keep things secrets, so as soon as they entered their room he explained what troubled him.

“I don’t understand,” Ohno tries to put the pieces together after Aiba had told him that he has no money to go back in his hometown.

“Your mother had spent all her money in this school but wouldn’t it be easier for you to study in a cheaper one?”

“Yeah,” Aiba agrees his head moving slightly as he enjoys Ohno’s warm hand in his hair. “But I wanted this one.”

“Why?”

Aiba stands up from Ohno’s lap and walks towards his own bed; he slips a hand under his pillow and pulls out an old photo from under it, then he sits again on Ohno’s bed.

“This is Kentarou, my best friend.” Aiba says warmly as he points at a young boy on the photo.

Ohno is slightly hurt by the comment but decides to not say it. On the contrary he looks intently at the photo. Two young boys are smiling brightly at the camera, holding each other’s arms. Ohno recognizes quickly one of them; it’s a photo of Aiba when he was younger.

“Don’t you have a more recent pic of you?” Ohno asks, his eyes never leaving the smiling face of the little Aiba.

“This is the last one we took together,” Aiba says sadly. “I cherish it like my more important treasure.” He adds as he puts the photo back in its original place carefully.

“Kentarou died the week after we took this photo.”

Ohno suddenly feels stupid for being jealous. “I’m sorry Aiba-chan.”

“It’s okay,” Aiba tries to smile “It’s been a long time ago, it doesn’t hurt as much as before.”

“What happens?” Ohno can’t help but want to know more, it also doesn’t explain why Aiba wants to study in his school.

“Kentarou was seriously sick. One day when we were playing in the park near our homes he fell into a deep hole. I tried to help him but I was too young and didn’t have the force to pull him out so I fell too. We have been stuck there for a long time, until night at least. As we waited for help, Kentarou had trouble to breathe. I thought it was because he was scared so I tried my best to make him feel at ease. After a while he was calm again,” Aiba stops suddenly and bows his head. Ohno knows he’s crying because he sees his friend wiping a tear.

“I only understood that my friend died once our parents got us out from the hole.”

Aiba lifts his head and tries to smile as he feels Ohno’s hard grip on his shoulder.

“I made a promise to myself. I’ll become a doctor and will find a cure to asthma. One day I read an interview of a doctor who is already working on a cure for it; Yonekura-sensei. I’ve read that he graduated from Cherry Blossom High School so I thought that if I do it too then I’ll be able to work with him one day.”

Ohno is really moved by Aiba’s innocence and willpower. Doing so many effort and sacrifices for such a cause is really admirable to Ohno’s eyes. Unconsciously he brings his face closer to Aiba and kisses him softly on the lips. It only lasts for a few seconds then Ohno backs off quickly.

“I’m sorry Aiba-chan! I don’t know why I did that, I…”

“Shh,” Aiba shushes him by resting his index against Ohno’s warm lips. “It was strange at first but thanks to you I feel better.”

Ohno looks at Aiba intently, his mind totally lost into those two big beautiful eyes. He rests a hand against Aiba’s cheek then smiles “Aiba Masaki, you’re really something.”

The little break the two have for Christmas had deepened their bond. Ohno had refused to join his family for their usual trip as he preferred to stay with his friend; of course he told his parents that he wanted to study.

The school was almost empty so both of them enjoyed every moment together and something more than ones call friendship had blossomed. However that happy moment has to end when school starts again. The first week goes calmly though Aiba has to face the same mean jokes about his ‘condition’ but the young man is the same as always and simply ignores them.

Most of the time when you’re the target of bullies, adults will say to simply ignore them and it will end. It may be true most of the time but never underestimate the stupidity and the fury of the bullies; sometimes ignoring them is the worst you can do.

One day, Ohno is listening carelessly to their teacher as he looks through the window. His eyes automatically catch Aiba and Ohno can’t help but smile as he sees his (shall he says it?) boyfriend.

Then he frowns as three students come towards him. As he fears the guys aren’t here to chat friendly about the weather and soon Ohno watches, helplessly as his boyfriend tries vainly to take back his schoolbag from the little band.  Ohno is angry at them, aren’t they a little too old for playing such a childish prank? Idiots will remain idiots, whatever they’re old or rich, Ohno concludes. As the schoolbag flies from a student to another, books and other stuff fell from it and Aiba tries to pick them as much as he can while the three other men run away. Ohno feels sick in his stomach as he watches his boyfriend running after them and his suspicion is right when he sees Aiba falling inside a hole; hole those stupid kids must have prepared for their prank.

“Masaki!” Ohno stands up suddenly, surprising the whole class and the teacher.

“Hmm Ohno-kun are you listening?” The teacher asks uneasy, it’s always bad to reprimand your boss’ children.

“I’m sorry sensei!” Ohno excuses himself before running out from the classroom.

While running as fast as he can, Ohno blames himself for letting things getting worse. He should have stopped them from the beginning instead of listening to Aiba’s request. Now because he’s been easy-going his lover may be hurt.

The laughter he hears as he reaches the courtyard definitely sound horrible. What’s so funny in being mean?

“Are you proud of yourself?” He screams once he’s near them.

“O-Ohno-sama!” One of them exclaims.

“Move away!” He orders as he bends over the hole. “Masaki? Masaki, are you alright?” He asks, still worried.

“Oh-chan,” Aiba’s soft voice warms up Ohno’s heart.

“Help me, it’s the least you can do after all.” He says to the other students.

Fortunately the hole isn’t too deep (those idiots must have been tired from the very first hit with the shovel.) and Aiba goes out quickly.

“Are you okay?” Ohno asks, worried that this stupid incident recalls Aiba what happened with Kentarou.

Aiba nods once, he seems a bit shocked but it’s more because of the fall than a possible recalling.

“You!” He says angrily at the students but Aiba stops him right away.

“It’s okay Oh-chan,” he tries to calm his boyfriend. “Let’s go.”

“No! Not this time Masaki!” Ohno seems to have set his mind. “You still haven’t understood? It will never be over unless we do something to stop them! Now you’ll come with me and we’ll talk to my father, I have enough of it!” He says resolute then grabs Aiba’s forearm and forces him to follow him.

“And you,” He threatens at the three students “you can already get ready to be kicked out from this school!” Then Aiba and he leave them alone, despite Aiba’s protests.

A few hours later the three guys are called into the principal’s office. They’re really worried and Ohno thinks that’s good. If you don’t want to be scolded by the principal then don’t do stupid things. It’s simple and clean.

“My son told me about your attitude towards Aiba-kun,” Ohno’s father says calmly but cold at the same time as he sits behind his huge desk.

“You should be ashamed of your behavior. What do you think your parents will think about that? Shall I remind you that you’re the son of the Prime Minister?” He says as he points at the oldest student. “And you,” he then looks at the two others “isn’t your mother working hard on her new book? What if the tabloids know about it? It won’t be good for your parent’s reputation.”

The three students never look at the principal nor at Aiba or Ohno; their feet seem more interesting at the moment.

“You should thank Aiba-kun for his decision,” the three of them lift their head right away and look at the principal. “Despite my son and my advices, Aiba-kun decided to give you another chance.”

If the moment wasn’t so serious Ohno would have laugh as he sees their surprised faces.

“I’ve never thought that people from your kind would be so stupid to bully, seems like I’ve been to naïve after all.” Ohno’s father sighs. “From now, there will be strict new rules about such behavior, and the next student who will do it again will be expelled right away.”

The three young men nod shyly at the orders.

“Now,now,” Aiba tries to make things more relaxed “It’s only words, you shouldn’t be so harsh on them.”

“No Masaki,” Ohno shakes his head softly “I know you think that only truth can hurt but never underestimate the power of words. Sometimes it hurts more than the truth itself and even if it does nothing to you think about other people. Maybe next time their target will be less strong-minded than you and who knows how it could end.”

Aiba realizes suddenly the seriousness of bullying and after all Ohno is right: it’s not because he doesn’t care that other react like him.

“You can leave now.” The principal says.

The five students bow respectfully before leaving the office.

“It’s not because Aiba-kun is less rich or famous than us that he’s less important. On the contrary I think he is the best among all of us,” Ohno says suddenly as soon as they closed the office’s door.

“You’re all thinking that we’re important, but think about it for a minute. What did we do? Nothing at all! We only enjoy or parent’s money and fame, we, as human beings haven’t accomplished anything yet. Contrary to us, Aiba-kun already knows what he wants to be later and he had chosen something big not for the fame or the money but because of a promise.”

Ohno faces Aiba once again and smiles “Yes, Aiba Masaki is really the best and I’m proud to be in love with him.”

Aiba blushes suddenly at the confession and urges Ohno to leave the place right away feeling shy.

As they leave holding each other hands, one of the students call Aiba’s name. The two lovers turn around, curious and are surprised as they see the youngest of the three bowing deeply and apologizing in the politest speech form.

Ohno and Aiba look at each other and then smile before walking away.

“I’m sure you will be the greatest doctor in the future.” Ohno says proudly.

“Hmm,” Aiba hums, lost in his thoughts. “Say Oh-chan, is it true that you still don’t know what do later?”

“Well I haven’t decided yet,” Ohno assents.

“I think you’ll do a great lawyer! Your speech just now was amazing!” Aiba says cheerfully.

“A lawyer, huh?” Ohno ponders about it for a second. “I don’t mind becoming a lawyer, as long as you stay with me.” He says before stopping Aiba in his track and kisses him deeply in the middle of the empty corridors.
