Chapter 13

Wow.

That was fantastic. Having sex with Satoshi is always great but this time…it was fabulous. I don’t even know how it started. We were talking lightly when I had this sudden need to kiss him and then…

I look at Satoshi’s sleeping form against me; he’s so cute when he’s sleeping, his little nose is always moving when he’s entering someone’s dream. It must be difficult for him to use his powers while he’s asleep, in fact he doesn’t rest at all. Too bad I don’t have his cover with me; I would give him a real resting moment.

I stand up and decide to wander a bit on the boat. As I walk down the long corridor, I see a woman looking through a slightly opened door.

“A-Aphrodite?” I call as I realize she’s Jun’s mom.

The goddess jolts a bit and focuses on me. She’s a bit surprised at first, but she quickly regains her confidence and smiles at me brightly.

“Aren’t they cute?” she asks fondly as she points at the door. I look into the room and see Jun and Sho sleeping in each other’s arms. Oh! So they’re together? Satoshi was right then.

“I’m so proud of him! Jun’s really powerful!” She claps her hands like a little girl.

“Ew! Don’t tell me you watched them…” I ask her, a bit disgusted.

She gives me a confused look before she realizes what I mean and shakes her head quickly. “No, no! This precious time is private even if I’m the Goddess of Love.”

I sigh with relief because for a mother to watch her son’s ‘private moment’ it would be really strange.

“What I mean is that…he had an effect on you too. Just now you had a great time, right?” She smiles at me knowingly.

I blush hard; she may be a Goddess but I can only see her as Jun’s mom and, well, it’s really disturbing.

“Satoshi and you love each other so much, huh?” She smiles again as she caresses my cheek.

Well I can’t hide my feelings to the goddess of Love, and it’s not like I want to hide them anyway. I ask her what she’s doing here and she replies that she just wants to see her son and his new lover.

“Why are you here? I mean, as a Goddess you don’t need to be in your human form.”

“That’s because I like using my human form.” She smiles. “And I wanted to see Jun as the Green Monster; he’s cute you know?" she laughs.

So I wasn’t wrong! Jun’s eyes were really green earlier. “Why are they green, by the way? Is it a new kind of power?”

“In a certain way, yes. In fact, now that Jun can be with the one he loves, his power is more powerful. The problem is that he can’t control his emotions well, particularly jealousy. They will turn green every time he’s jealous and pink when…”

“Okay. Okay. I think I understand,” I cut her short.

“I wish I could stay with him, you know? In fact we all want to stay with you,” she says suddenly with a sad smile.

“What prevents you from doing so? I mean, we don’t really know why our parents can’t see us.”

“It’s because of your destiny. As your parents we would help you when you’re in danger, and it would change your destiny in the end. You have a big task to accomplish, but you have to do it alone. Your mother interfered when she brought the five of you into this world.”

“So did you when you helped Jun to learn where Sho was.”

“Technically I didn’t do anything,” she argues.

“Will we really see our world again?”

Aphrodite pats my head fondly and shakes her head. “I’m sorry, I can’t tell you.” I should have known she couldn’t answer me.

She looks one more time through the open door and tells me that she has to go. I nod and watch her disappear. Aphrodite isn’t like the other gods; she’s childish and funny, not so serious like my mom or our other parents. She’s also very different from Jun.

I sigh and head for the deck. There I watch the crew working hard on the boat; they greet me in a friendly way, but don’t stop their work. As I walk on the deck I spot Kazunari near the prow; he seems confused. Silently I watch him; my friend looks like he’s lost in his thoughts as he watches the deep ocean in front of him. Kazu then lowers his head and sighs heavily as he covers his face with his hands.

“Yo! What’s wrong?” I ask cheerfully.

He jumps in surprise which is very rare of him; as I thought, he’s really bothered by something.

“Nothing. I’m just seasick,” he answers before leaning against the edge.

Now that he mentions it, it’s true that Kazu doesn’t like the sea. I remember a really funny day when the five of us rented a boat and went fishing. Satoshi caught a few fish and a tanned face; Jun, Sho and I came back empty-handed while Kazu had a bag full of his lunch that had previously been in his stomach.

“Where’s Ariadne?” I ask to try and change the subject.

“I don’t know, and I don’t want to know!” he replies dryly. Okay he doesn’t like the princess, but he doesn’t need to be so mean.

I’m about to tell him he doesn’t need to be so aggressive when the boat moves suddenly and a loud noise of breaking wood is heard. Are we under attack again? Can’t we just have a day or two without having to fight? I make my bow appear in my hands as I try to stop one of the crew who’s running everywhere.

“What happened?” I yell but no one has the time to answer me. “I knew it! We've been attacked! I’m sure it’s those monsters in the sea…Camille and Sylvia!”

“You mean Charybdis and Scylla,” I hear Kazunari say behind me. It’s almost the same, the names don’t matter.

“What’s going on?” I hear Jun’s voice and when I turn around, I see my three other friends and Ariadne coming towards us.

“It’s okay! No big deal!” one of the crew screams to the captain who bends over the edge of the boat.

The old man bows respectfully as Ariadne comes nearer and explains that the boat has hit some rocks; he also apologizes about the fact that it will take more time to reach Crete because even if the hole isn’t big, the boat still needs to be repaired. Fortunately there’s a little island nearby so we’ll stay there while the crew works on the boat. For once Ariadne doesn’t seem to care. She turns around and shrugs. That’s when I see the princess and Kazunari exchange a look before looking away from one another, a bit embarrassed.

I’m torn from my questioning thoughts as I feel Satoshi leaning against me. “Maybe there will be some fruit, I’m starving,” he says sleepily as he rubs his eyes. My little Satoshi’s always tired after sex. Well he’s sleepy most of the time actually…

“Oh and a lake or some water! I really need a bath,” Sho adds as he leans against Jun who has his arm wrapped around Sho’s neck.

Come to think of it…I inhale deeply as a strange smell comes to tease my nostrils. What’s that scent? It’s like some fruit or something, but I can’t find the name.

“…Olive?” Yeah! It smells like olive actually. I tilt my head and look at Sho who becomes as red as a tomato and hides his face in Jun’s neck.

“I’m going to puke,” Kazunari rolls his eyes at Sho’s behavior and bends over the edge once again.

“Oh, Kazu’s seasick again?” Satoshi asks, a bit worried as he goes nearer to Kazu and pats his back in a friendly manner.

I watch my friends acting like they always do before that demigod thing messes up our lives. Though I’m happy that everything seems back to normal, I can’t help but notice Ariadne standing behind us and watching my friends with a sad smile. Her face becomes neutral as soon as I reach her side.

“Why don’t you join us?” I ask casually as I try to put my hands in my pockets, but realize I don’t have any.

She shakes her head and looks at the sword in her hands. “I just want to give Sho his broadsword back.”

Ariadne sighs deeply and walks towards Jun and Sho; the latter takes the weapon and nods his appreciation. However Ariadne seems to be thinking deeply as she doesn’t move and stares at him. She bites her bottom lip and shows her back as she speaks.

“I’m sorry.”

Jun and Sho look at each other, lost before Jun pats Sho’s shoulder and leaves them alone. I know it’s bad to hear private talk, but it’s well-known that I’m curious.

“For what?” Sho says slowly and gently.

“This is my fault. The Amazons…” She rubs her forehead. “If I didn’t ask you to go instead of me it wouldn’t have happened!”

“Listen, it’s not your fault. You didn’t know they were waiting for me, right?” Sho approaches her and tries to rest a hand on her shoulder in a friendly manner, but Ariadne dodges it and steps back.

“Of course not!” she defends herself and looks back and forth, embarrassed. “You know what? Just forget about it. I’m not used to this kind of talk, and it’s not like we’re friends or anything.” Then she walks away.

“But we are.” Ariadne stops suddenly as she hears Sho’s reply. Then she lowers her head and from where I’m standing, I can swear that I’ve seen a sad smile. Silently she walks away for good.

There’s something strange with Ariadne. I understand that she’s a princess, and I’m sure it’s difficult to have friends when you’re from royal blood, but we’re different. She’s the one who came to us; we should be the ones to be suspicious. Why can’t she simply have faith in us?

I’m torn from my gloomy thoughts by Kazunari’s voice. My friend is the first one who lands on the solid and safe ground. He waves at us and almost orders us to join him. Maybe a little walk in the forest won’t be bad and if I'm lucky I’ll find some fresh fruit for my dear Satoshi. I do have to admit that I’m also hungry. I turn around and wonder if Ariadne would like to come with us, but a friend of mine always said that when a woman leaves in the middle of a talk it’s better to leave her alone for a while.

After some time we find a clearing with fruit trees and a lake, exactly what we're looking for. How convenient! I just sit near Jun by the lake’s edge as we watch our lovers take a bath. I can’t help but smile as I see the way Jun looks at Sho. I’ve never seen such a look from him; he’s really in love but why didn’t he tell us earlier? Satoshi talked about some curse or something like that, but I don’t understand why Jun kept it as a secret from us as well. Okay, maybe it’s because I can’t keep my mouth shut, and Kazu would have used it as a threat but hey that’s what friends do!

“You shouldn’t be so jealous you know?” I say as I refer to his green eyes from earlier.

Jun chuckles and rubs his forehead. “I can’t help it. Before I thought that our love was impossible, so I wanted the best for Sho even if it’s with someone other than me.”

I nod silently.

“However now everything is different.” He stares intently at Sho who’s playing with Satoshi in the water. I can see the green color deep in his eyes, but Jun blinks and everything goes back to normal. “I want him for myself only. I know I’m selfish, but I’m so scared of losing him.”

I understand his fears very well, I have the same about Satoshi, but contrary to us Jun knows if Sho is his fated one.

“Jun!” Sho waves at us and motions for us to join them. Jun is the first one to reach them; just when I’m going to come too I hear someone speaking.

“Maybe they won’t stay here for too long.”

“It’s better for them or else she’ll be mad again.”

“Do you think we should scare them so they’ll run away?”

“Or maybe we could let them be caught, and we’ll have some free time for a change.”

What’s the meaning of this? I stand up and follow the voices into the forest. Is someone living here? Suddenly I come face to face with two wolves. The two animals look surprised but soon they show me their shining and white teeth with a menacing growl.

“It’s okay, I don’t want to hurt you.” I say, trying to sound friendly as I take a step closer. “It’s just that I heard you talking about us and someone who would be mad.”

“This is the first time that a human can talk with us,” says one of the wolves.

“Are you an enchanter too?” asks the other one as he takes a step back.

“I’m a demigod. My mother is Artemis, and I can speak with animals.”

“Then listen to us: take your friends with you and leave this damn forest while you still have time.”

What does he mean? What are they afraid of? “Why?”

All of a sudden a strange melody is heard; a beautiful female voice is singing a strange and hypnotizing song. The wolves jump on me and cover my body in a protective way. The second after, everything is quiet again and the animals help me to stand up.

“It’s too late,” one of them sighs as he lowers his head.

Too late? For what? I need to go check if my friends are alright. As I start to run, the wolves pass before me and stop me from going any further.

“Don’t! It’s useless,” one of them tells me.

Why does everyone in this world give up so easily?! Don't they have friends or family they want to protect?!

I’m going to push them when I hear Ariadne’s voice coming from far away.

“DON’T STAY HERE! CIRCE! CIRCE!”

I run towards her and take the princess in my arms as she breathes heavily.

“What are you talking about?”

“We…need…to…run away…Circe…it’s…Circe’s…” she pants.

The wolves reach us, and they both bow in front of her.

“Dear Princess Ariadne, it’s a pleasure to see you again,” they say at the same time.

“Huh? You know her?” I ask as I point at her face.

“We were her former personal guardians in the past.”

“HUH?!”

“What are they saying?” asks Ariadne, who clearly hates being ignored.

“They say they were your former guardians. You had wolves as guardians?!”

“My former guardians?” She thinks deeply for a minute. “I never had wolves as guardians!”

The wolves push her in the other direction, motioning for her to leave. “Queen Circe won’t be pleased if she sees you here, my princess.”

Who is Circe? Wait a minute, this name seems familiar.

“Circe is my stepmother and the mother of my half-brother, the Minotaur. We aren’t on good terms,” she explains, a bit embarrassed. “Where are the others? We need to leave this island before Circe finds you!”

“The wolves say it’s too late. Does that mean…” I start to run towards the clearing and as I fear there's nobody there.

“Satoshi!” I scream his name again and again but no one answers me.

They might be somewhere; they can’t have disappeared so quickly. I have promised myself that I would protect Satoshi no matter what and now look at what’s happening.

I feel Ariadne's hand as I hear a soft voice in the air. Someone is singing. Such a beautiful voice…

“Masaki, don’t.” This is Ariadne. “She’ll hurt you if she catches you.”

For Gods’ sake, will she tell me what the meaning of this is?! I grab her hand and stare at her angrily. I’m fed up with all these ‘let’s give up’ or ‘forget them’ excuses. I want to find my friends now and take them with me on the boat again. I want to leave this damn world! I want to lead a normal life, with my friends on our world, with our parents and our friends.

“Let’s find them okay?” Ariadne surprises me. That’s the first time she's said something like that, and she seems honest with her gentle smile. I can only nod as she puts her hand in mine and shows me the way.

After a few minutes a mansion stands before us. Ariadne, the wolves, and I hide in the bushes near a window. Inside there’s a lot of animals, wolves, lions, but mainly pigs, and in the middle stands a beautiful woman. She’s tall, with dark long hair; her eyes are as green and shining as emeralds, and she wears a long transparent blue dress.

“Circe…” Ariadne whispers heinously as her hand crushes mine. That’s great, I love family reunions, but right now I’m more focused on finding my friends. Where are they?

I watch Circe sitting on her throne; she seems annoyed. “This is the first time something like this has happened,” she sighs and points at one of the pigs in front of her. “You give me the cat.”

The pig bows and heads for a huge cage where a few animals are captive.

“Hey! Don’t touch me with your dirty hands!” The cat growls. That voice…

“It’s not hands, Kazu, it’s called-” says a white bunny. Wait a minute. Kazu?! And that voice, could it be…?

The cat finally is caught and brought to the queen. “Well sorry, Mister I Know Everything, but whatever they're called, they’re dirty!”

“Kazu,” I whisper, still surprised. Ariadne looks at me, as surprised as I am before she focuses again on the black and grey cat which is now resting on Circe’s lap.

“Are you kidding me?” she asks me with disgust.

“Someone needs to tell me why people always prefer dogs or cats to other more interesting and rare species,” a peacock says, a bit angry. Okay, I can already tell that it’s Jun.

“Well at least you’re a beautiful and rare animal. Not like me, a simple and useless bunny.”

“I think you’re cute. And I love your tiny fluffy tail,” The pea- Jun says and almost takes the bun- Sho’s tail in his mouth.

“Hey!” The bunny, I mean Sho, jumps a few centimeters away and grabs his tail in a protective manner.

At least I know my friends are safe for now; they have been changed into animals, but they’re still alive. Now I need to find Satosh…

“Oh my gods!” I exclaim softly as I’ve finally found Satoshi.

“What? What?” asks Ariadne, worried.

“Sato…shi…” My heart skips a beat.

“Guys, I can smell Masaki’s scent, he’s near,” a hedgehog says while his long and tiny nose moves as he smells the air.

I put my hand on my mouth to prevent a scream. I can’t believe it! Why is he so cute?! Look at his tiny nose! And also his fur, and his tiny paws! I want to hug him right away!

“Look at him,” Ariadne whispers angrily as her fingers curl painfully around mine. “Isn’t it disgusting? How long will he let that old woman caress him?”

I try to forget the pain in my hand and focus on Kazu. He’s lying on Circe’s lap and purring as the enchantress caresses him gently. It’s not surprising; Kazunari likes this kind of touch, and being a cat may increase the sensations. Moreover, I know that Kazu likes women in general, but Circe is really beautiful (and not as old as Ariadne suggests).

“Nice boobs!” At least I know why Kazu's enjoying her attentions so much.

“The neck. I’ll crush it slowly and painfully!” Ariadne threatens.

“She doesn’t hurt them, I think you-“

“Not her! Him! I’ll beat him to death after we save them.”

“By any chance, are you jealous?”

Ariadne stares at me and starts to laugh. “Are you crazy? Who would fall in love with that stupid pervert?”

Hmm, I don’t buy it. I’m not as good as Jun when it comes to love, but I can recognize when someone is jealous.

“Really,” she says and gives me a proud look. “It’s just…How would you feel if you saw Kazunari being caressed by your mother?”

Well she’s right somehow, but we should not be talking about something so trivial. We need to find a way to save them and to turn them back to their normal state. As Artemis’ son I can talk to her; she seems to like animals, so it wouldn’t be a problem, right? Or maybe Ariadne will be enough; she’s her step mother after all.

“What is the word you don’t understand when I say ‘We hate each other’?” she asks me after I tell her about my plan.

Okay, I’m the only one who can do something then. I stand up and decide it will be better if I enter in a straightforward way. Just as I’m about to go in, in the blink of an eye, Ariadne and I land near the lake and Hermes is flying in front of our eyes.

“You’re as crazy and airheaded as your mom,” he says in a disapproving tone.

“Circe isn’t the kind of woman who will welcome you with her arms wide open, you know? She hates humans and only trusts animals. Why do you think most of the men that have crossed her path are turned into pigs? Don’t get me wrong, I’m sure you would look great with a snout and a corkscrew tail, but I think Satoshi will be a bit scared if you want to hug him in this state.”

As if having Kazunari making fun of me all the time isn’t enough, now even his father is mocking me.

“Then what can we do? We can’t let leave them in this state!” I ask, a bit annoyed by Hermes’ carefree attitude.

“Well, my son seems to enjoy his current state.”

“That rat, I’ll kill him,” Ariadne threatens again.

“Correction sweetheart, he’s a cat not a rat,” the god smiles, amused.

“Can we stay focused, please?”

Hermes turns towards me, and I can see that his playful attitude has disappeared. “Listen.”

He forces us to sit down as he explains his plan.

“Within an hour or two, Odysseus and his crew will land on this little island. I can’t tell you how, but I’ll make sure that he will save your friends.”

“You mean you’ll help us? Isn’t it against the rules?”

Still flying in the air, Hermes crosses his legs and shakes his head. “Do you know who you’re talking to? Everyone knows that I never follow the rules.”

Yeah, that reminds me of someone else. He orders us to stay hidden in the forest and to wait. I don’t like it, I really don’t like it though we do as he tells us. Then he leaves us, saying that he needs to putter around in the garden. I think I will never understand him.

“Can I speak freely?” I ask as I want to talk with Ariadne about something that’s bothering me.

She nods once and waits for me to continue.

“Why did you come to save us?”

Ariadne looks at me strangely and a bit confused by my question. The thing is, before she was always saying ‘forget it’ or ‘leave him alone’ when one of us was in danger but this time she came to warn us. What's changed?

“I…” She seems to think about her words carefully. I notice that she usually bites her lower lip when she’s embarrassed, and she’s doing it right now.

“I need you to kill Echidna so I can have my reward from the gods.”

She turns her head to the side and avoids any eye contact with me. I can tell she’s lying, but why? Doesn’t she trust us after the many things that have happened? We fall into a heavy silence and wait for any sign from Hermes.

After what feels like centuries, we hear noise coming from the beach. As Hermes said, a few men land on the island. Ariadne suddenly covers my ears; I think she's just protecting me from Circe's singing. I watch the crew walking in the direction of Circe’s house; they’re totally under her spell. Behind them there’s also a young man who covers his ears but still follows the rest of the men. Once the spell is over, Ariadne uncovers my ears and I thank her quietly. I can see her cheeks reddening even as she looks to the side.

We reach Circe’s mansion again, and the men are all in front of her, motionless. She gives them some drink before she moves her wand above their heads, and each of them are turned into pigs. The young man that followed them starts to run away, and we quickly follow him.

“Odysseus! Odysseus!” the man screams as he spots the man himself near the beach. Breathless, he tells him everything, and just when Odysseus thinks about going to Circe another young man with a golden reed in his hands approaches them. The newcomer gives Odysseus some herbs and tells him how to defeat Circe. I don’t hear everything because Ariadne is always asking me where Hermes is and complains that we shouldn’t trust the father of the ‘pervert’. Soon after, Odysseus walks toward Circe’s mansion and the young man who helped him comes toward us.

He disappears behind a golden dust and Hermes gives us a huge smile. At least Ariadne can’t complain anymore about the fact that Hermes didn’t do anything. As we return to Circe's mansion, I ask Hermes why he had waited for Odysseus. I can do the same things he does after all!

“I’m not sure that Satoshi will be pleased if you take Odysseus’ place,” he grins as we look into the mansion. Odysseus is threatening Circe with his sword, and the enchantress lets go of her wand.

Why does he say that? And what does Satoshi have to do with this?

“Fine. I’ll free your crew and the rest of the men if you share my bed,” Circe says as she crosses her legs.

Now I think it’s better if it’s Odysseus and not me. He asks her to swear to the names of gods that she won’t try to hurt him. The both of them leave the main room for Circe’s room (I think). When everything is quiet, Ariadne, Hermes and I enter the mansion. The pigs and the wolves don’t even care about us; they’re too busy speaking about their future release. I open the cage where my friends are being held captive and quickly take Satoshi in my hands. With his long and cute tiny nose he smells my face and I can only giggle at the sensation.

“I knew you would come to save us!” Satoshi finally says.

“Of course! I will never leave you.”

“Do you guys realize that the famous Odysseus has saved us?” Sho says in awe.

“Yes and? He’s not that great to begin with, and not as handsome as I thought,” Jun says angrily, and I notice how green his eyes are.

“Are you kidding me? He’s far better than in the pictures from the books!” Maybe Jun doesn’t know that Odysseus is Sho’s favorite hero.

“You still have the time to snatch Circe’s place and have sex with him instead!” Jun answers irately and turns his back to Sho.

“Good idea! That way I can have Circe for myself!” Kazunari butts in.

“You! Don’t speak about Ariadne’s step-mother in that way!” I warn Kazu.

“What did he say?! Something perverted, right? I’ll kill him! Let me go, I’ll crush his little neck!” I hold Ariadne strongly or she will do something she might regret later.

“By the way, what are you doing here, Hermes?” Satoshi asks as he tries to change the topic.

Before I have the time to explain how he came to save us, Hermes speaks first.

“I’m here not as Kazunari’s father, but as the messenger of the Gods. You know that Athena is also the protector of heroes, and she asked me to help Odysseus.

“My mom sent you?”

“That bitch.”

“Jun!”

Suddenly a pig cuts everyone's conversation short. “Circe’s coming.”

“For a hero is a fast comer. I can do better!” Kazunari sniggers.

We quickly leave the main room to hide somewhere but before that I make sure to kiss Satoshi's cute little nose; since I’ve seen him in his hedgehog form I want to kiss it!

As she promised, Circe returns all the men to normal. They hug and shout happily, while my friends exit the mansion quickly. We run towards our boat; thankfully the crew had the time to repair it.

The moon is already high in the sky as we leave slowly the island. I watch silently on the deck. My friends are already acting as if nothing happened: Jun and Sho resume their lovers’ quarrel in the hold, while Kazunari hides from Ariadne's murderous desire and Satoshi…

“What are you thinking?” I feel his arms wrapping around my waist as he rests his chin on the crook of my neck.

“I want to be far from this island as soon as possible.”

“Why? It’s not like she wanted to kill us. For once it was pretty harmless.”

“Still, I blame myself for not being able to protect you.”

“Masaki,” Satoshi breaks the embrace and forces me to turn around and face him. “It’s okay. I knew you would save us anyway.” Then he pecks my lips gently.

I wrap my arms around his neck and give him a proper kiss. I don’t even want to know what it would be like without him. I already had this fear with Astarope, and I don’t want to feel it ever again.

“Let’s just leave this world as quick as possible.”

Suddenly a heavy sea mist surrounds us and the sea, which was calm a few seconds before, is moving rapidly. The boat shakes violently because of the strong waves and we lose our balance, Satoshi falling on top of me.

“What’s going on?” Can’t we have some rest before another fight?

We stand up and look at the sea. It seems like the boat is moving faster.

Suddenly Satoshi lifts his head and looks at the moon. I do it too and notice that the moon is full and bright tonight.

Satoshi faces me and smiles at me lovingly. “I think we’ve found your second power, Masaki.”
