Chapter 3:

Arashi was chatting happily while waiting for the interviewer. Aiba and Ohno were playing ‘janken pon’ while Sho and Jun talked about the last movie they watched, and Nino played by himself with his dear girlfriend: his DS.

“Namida chorori~” Sang Nino as he pushed hard on the buttons.

The others laughed softly before they carried on what they were doing. Hiromu watched them carefully; he still didn’t understand how those guys would have even one fan. They were nice but...not professional at all!

“Excuse me.” Said a female voice. A beautiful woman came in, followed by a photographer.

Arashi stopped their talks, stood up and bowed respectfully when the female interviewer came in. After the usual greeting the six of them sat down and the interview started quickly.

“It’s been a while since our readers send so many questions!” The woman was smiling brightly and Hiromu could feel that she was already at ease with those guys.

“Potato’s readers are so nice! But I wonder what they want to know about us. Every time they find new questions, it’s incredible!” Laughed Sho softly.

“They’re indeed creative.” Nodded Nino.

“Except the question about which member we could date.” Grunted Jun. He hated this question so much.

“Let’s start about your career!” Announced the woman as she took her notebook and signaled her photographer to take pictures.

“How do you feel after the huge commotion about your tenth anniversary?” She asked; her pen already ready to write down their answers.

“We didn’t think it would be…”Started Jun, but a shout cut him short.

“TEN YEARS?! YOU GUYS HAVE BEEN IDOLS FOR TEN YEARS?!” Asked Hiromu with his eyes wide open.

“Well…yes?” Reply Aiba a bit embarrassed.

“Who is it?” Asked the woman when she finally noticed Hiromu in the corner of the room.

“He’s Hiro-chan.” Said Ohno simply.

“He’s our friend. Please take care of him as well.” Added Aiba as he bowed his head respectfully.

“He’s…your friend? Isn’t he a little too young?”

“Friendship isn’t related to age.” Replied Nino with a smirk.

“You’re…right. Anyway, how do you feel then?”

As usual Arashi told how thankful they were towards their fans and tried to describe their feelings during that time. It was still vivid in their mind and Hiromu saw the soft smile they had on their faces. They were really grateful, it was obvious. As the interview continued, Hiromu thought that maybe he was wrong. Those guys that were always fooling around and laughing every second seemed so professional and serious right now and the flashes from the photographer didn’t seem to bother them; did they only saw them? Though they didn’t seem different. Ohno was as usual not talkative; Aiba tried to answer the question seriously but always failed and made the others laugh; Jun and Sho were the ones that led the interview and Nino…only talked when he had a good word to make the interviewer and his friends laugh. The interview was just as when the members had a talk with themselves, but a strange feeling of professionalism was at the same time very present.

“Do you think you will make another Asia Tour this year?” Asked the interviewer, her eyes shining with the hope of a scoop.

“ASIA?! You guys don’t only work in Japan?!” Shouted Hiromu again. Knowing that those five men were working for Japan’s entertainment for 10 years was one thing….But even in Asia?! Were they really that great?!

Arashi just laughed once again, Nino even tried to hide his smile behind his hand, a gesture that the photographer hadn’t missed to immortalize. On the contrary, the woman didn’t seem so pleased with the incessant interruptions Hiromu was making.

“So Aiba-san, how are you doing with your new play?” She tried to smile, but that little boy in the corner of the room was ruining her perfect moment with Arashi!

Once they had calmed, Aiba answered the question as he always did; he replied normally but always put one or two wrong words that made his friends laugh. Then, one by one, the interviewer asked questions about each other members’ individual works.

“Wow…you’re really busy!” Said Hiromu amazed, followed by an annoying -according to the woman, whistle.

And just like before, Arashi laughed because of Hiro-chan cuteness. But this time their laugh was softer and tainted by a bit of embarrassment. From the opposite side of the table, the woman hit the table with her fist and turned her gaze towards Hiromu.

“Are you really their friend?! You seem to know nothing about them! And you’re disturbing our interview!” She asked angrily.

Hiromu looked down and started to fidget with his hands. He didn’t mean to disturb them…as usual he was just a burden for the others.

“Excuse me but I think the interview is over.” Announced Jun as he stood up but still smiled at the woman.

The latter lifted her head to look at Jun and her face was showing her surprise. Did she make them angry?! It was all the kid’s fault! That stupid little pig!

“You’re right MatsuJun!” Said Sho as he looked at his watched and stood up as well. “We have even extended it.”

The three others stood up and bowed respectfully. “Thank you very much! We had a lot of fun!” Said Aiba.

“Ah…ahem…er…I should be the one to thank you…” Replied the woman as she stood up quickly and bowed as well.

Hiromu didn’t looked up, he felt so depressed and guilty. Why did he have to always bother people around him? They were working and as nice as Arashi was, this time they wouldn’t forgive him for disturbing them during their work. As he was deeply thinking, the kid felt someone’s shadow over him and just when he wanted to see who it was he felt his little and light body being lifted in the air and soon Hiromu was watching the room from Ohno’s shoulders.

“Eh? Ehhhhh?!” He screamed a bit afraid.

“Let’s go Hiro-chan!” Sang Ohno and Aiba playfully as they headed towards the exit.

Jun and Sho bowed once again. “Thank you very much. Hopefully we will work together again.” Added Jun.

“Oh-chan don’t bow when you’re holding Hiro-chan on your shoulders!” Warned Nino, hiting Ohno’s head as he passed near him.

“Ah you’re right!” Conceded the leader before giving a soft smile to the woman and exited the room.

*~*~*~

They were once again in the van, heading to their new destination.

“Karage! Karage!!! Yummy karagee~! Sang Aiba, bouncing on his seat.

“Do you like karage, Hiro-chan?”

Since Ohno had pushed him in the car the kid was silent and didn’t dare to look at any of them. He lifted slowly his head when he heard Aiba talking, but he only looked at him for a few seconds before looking at his hands once again.

Sho leaned over him and whispered: “What’s wrong Hiro-chan?”

“I’m sorry…” He whispered without raising his head.

“About what?” Asked Ohno totally lost.

“I’m a burden to you…I’m sorry for disturbing your work…” He tried his best to fight against the tears that were coming on the corner of his eyes.

“You’re talking about the interview? It was fun on the contrary!” Reply Jun with a warm smile, though Hiromu wasn’t looking at him.

“For once we avoided the usual questions, such as who we want to marry among the five of us, or who we think would be a good father and blah!” Added Nino shuffling his cards.

“Exactly! It wasn’t your real work and I was like a bull in a China shop! I’ve ruined everything, now the readers will be deceived by your answers.” Replied Hiromu felling guiltier with each second that had passed.

“What’s Nino is trying to say is…thank you! And I don’t think the readers will be deceived.” Said the rapper with a soft smile as he put a warm hand on Hiromu’s shoulder.

Finally the kid lifted his head at the contact and looked at Sho then at each member one by one.

“Re-really?” He sniffled.

“Aaaaaah Hiro-chan you’re so cute!! I can’t help it!!” Said Aiba with teary eyes as he unfastened his seat belt and literally jumped on Hiromu to hug him strongly.

The driver tried his best to not look at the rearview mirror when he heard screams such as ‘Don’t Aiba-chan!’, ‘This is dangerous! Stop it!’ or even ‘His face becomes blue!!”

*~*~*~

Finally they all arrived safely at the building. Hiromu’s face had found its natural color but something has changed. Hiromu was smiling. Not the usual fake smile he had plastered on his face whenever an adult asked him to smile, but a genuine one. And so, he was now skipping in the corridor with Aiba.

The rest of Arashi followed them closely with a soft smile.

“It’s great to see the kid acting like one.” Said Sho, crossing his arms upon his chest.

“Yeah.” Nodded Jun.

“But…you’re talking about Hiro-chan or Aiba-chan?” Asked Nino with a smirk.

Ohno, Sho and Jun chuckled and headed to their greenroom.

Just as their manager had promised, there was karage waiting for them. Aiba jumped happily and ran towards the table where their lunches were put. Hiromu watched the members acting freely in the room. Ohno joined Aiba at the table and they started to eat quickly. Sho sat on the sofa and picked a newspaper from his bag. Nino sat near Ohno and took out his DS from his pocket, eating a piece of karage when the leader was feeding him. As for Jun, he sat near Sho and looked at his mails in his mobile phone. Curious the kid came closer to Jun and looked intently at the strange object in his hands.

“What is it?” He asked, frowning.

“What? That?” Asked Jun pointing at his mobile phone. “It’s a phone.”

“Eh? So tiny?! And where’s the wire?” Asked Hiro-chan totally amazed by that thing.

“Wire? There’s none…It has a battery and that’s why we call it a ‘mobile phone’.”

“Wow! Japanese people are really amazing!”

“What the…” Started Jun but he was cut short when someone knocked at the door.

Their manager came in and informed the guys that the meeting would start very soon. Each of them stood up and walked towards the exit. Ohno turned back and knelt in front of Hiromu.

“We’ve a very important meeting right now. I’m sorry but you can’t come with us. Could you wait for us here for a moment? I promise we won’t be long.”

Hiromu nodded silently and smiled when Ohno patted his head. The leader gave him a genuine smile and left the room. Once he was alone, Hiromu looked in the room and tried to find something to play with. His eyes stopped on Jun’s Ipod which was put on a strange device. The kid got near and after a little inspection he concluded that it was speakers. He stood on tiptoe and pushed the play button with his fingertip. Music started to play in the room and Hiro-chan looked at the strange object in front of his. He knew that Japanese people like new stuff and all, but he had never thought they would be so smart in technologies!

Though he hadn’t seen an Ipod before, the kid understood the way to use it very quickly and soon he was searching for an Arashi folder inside the menu. Their career had started with songs, and that woman from this morning was right: he didn’t know them even if they call him their friend. At least he could listen to one or two of their songs.

It was good, really good. Their song had a new and fresh tune that Hiromu had never heard before. They weren’t the best singers he had listened to but their voices mixed perfectly and the songs were kind of…encouraging! The kid started to dance slowly, turning his head from right to left, checking that no one was coming. And little by little he let his body moves according to the music. As far as he could remember it was the first time he was dancing happily. Honestly…it was the first time he was dancing at all.

Just as Ohno has promised the meeting was over quickly. Johnny-san only wanted to talk about their next single and the way the guys would promote it. As they came towards the door of their room, they could hear some music coming from it. Slowly Aiba opened the door and looked inside the room. He chuckled softly and hid his smile behind his hands as he faced the others. They all looked as well and had a bright smile on their faces when they saw Hiro-chan singing and dancing all over the room while ‘Sakura Sake’ was playing. When the kid started to play air guitar Arashi came in and joined him. At first Hiromu was a bit surprised and embarrassed but when he saw those five grown men playing air guitar he followed them.

The room was filled with laughers, happy shouts and scraps of lyrics. They all let themselves fall on the couch when the song was over, laughing a little more as they tried to catch their breath.

“I’ve forgotten how much I love air guitar…” Aiba sighed with contentment as he patted his stomach which hurt from the laugh.

“That was great…” Nodded Jun closing his eyes for a minute.

“I like your songs.” Said Hiromu bluntly.

“Thank you~!” Replied the five men in unison.

They all fell in a comfortable silence, it felt so right to be together and Hiromu was discovering little by little what playing and laughing with friends was. Actually he just understood what having friends meant. Maybe those idiots weren’t as bad as he had thought and maybe…he could stay with them a little longer?

As if on cue, Aiba turned his face towards the kid and looked at him with a pout.

“Hey Hiro-chan…won’t you stay with us a little longer?”

The other members didn’t say anything, but they all looked at Hiromu with a soft smile.

“…Maybe…” Hesitated Hiromu.

“Really?!” Aiba jumped from his seat and looked at the kid with his eyes shining with hope.

“But only if you promise me that your stupidity will not rub off on me!” He added with a smirk.

“What a brat!” Laughed Nino as he hit the tip of the kid’s head.

*~*~*~

It was about time to leave the agency and none of the member was here! The manager looked at his watch every second and still there was nobody in the car! Worried (for their schedule) he entered the elevator and was silently begging for reaching the seventh floor faster.

He didn’t bother to knock before coming in; the guys were used to that, but he was speechless when he saw the six of them asleep on the ground or the couch.

“I could wait for them…” He said with a grumpy tone but as mean as a manager could be, he couldn’t help and smiled softly when he saw the men sleeping peacefully.

Feeling a bit guilty the manager woke them up one by one and starting from Jun. The idol rubbed his sleepy eyes and apologized quietly to his manager. But the older man didn’t even care as he pointed at Nino.

“Look.” He whispered with a genuine smile.

Jun looked as he was asked and bit his lower lip to prevent a laugh.

“Too bad that I don’t have a camera… It would be a perfect picture that I could use for blackmail…” He smirked when he saw Hiromu and Nino sleeping in each other arms on the soft blue carpet.

*~*~*~

The rest of the day went smoothly. Arashi filmed the end of their PV and Hiromu watched them from a corner. It was interesting and the kid looked at everything with admiration. It was funny how the guys could be professional one second while the camera was filming and then total dorks the second after.

“Hey Loser!” Called a voice behind him.

Hiromu turned around and saw a group of kids calling after him a few meters away. He looked back at the site where they guys were busy and with a sigh he walked towards the other kids.

“What did I tell you? Just like a dog! You call him and he will come like a good puppy!” Laughed one of the kids.

He wasn’t taller than Hiromu, but he looked older. The kid acted as if he was the leader of the group composed of three other boys and one girl that stayed behind. The four boys laughed and came closer Hiromu.

“What do you want?!” Asked Hiro-chan clenching his fists. Those kids were the ones that beat him the other day, and the day before, and even the one before, and again and again. In fact, since Hiromu came in Japan, these kids were always the ones looking for a fight!

“Are you deaf or idiot?” Asked the leader.

He came closer to Hiromu and pushed him.

“We don’t want an American in our town, get lost!” He ordered, pushing him harder and making Hiromu fall on loudly on the ground.

“I’m Japanese!” Replied Hiromu. He tried to stand up, but the other kid pushed him again, kicking him this time.

“Eiji stop it!” Begged the little girl.

“Shut up Julie!” Said Eiji with an angry tone.

He focused on Hiromu and kicked him again, this time harder and in his stomach.

Not so far, behind a tree Jun, Nino and Sho were spying.

“I’ll give this kid a lesson!” Warned Jun in a whisper.

Just when he was about to walked towards the kids, he felt a hand against his chest and a second on his shoulder.

“Don’t.” Ordered Sho with a serious face.

“He has to learn by himself.” Said Nino in a low voice as he stared at Hiromu still on the ground.
