Pet Suggestions?

So, about a week ago, I gave my adorable white ferret away to my sister. D:
I loved him, but he has a better home now.
There is a story though as to why.
Tropical Storm Fay flooded our house for 6 hours when it came through, so we had to get all new carpeting, redo the entire kitchen, and replaster a wall.
Prior to this, we didn't care about our carpet cause it was so old.
Hence, we let the ferret run around the house and crap and pee in corners as he pleased. XD
Once the carpet was replaced though, we couldn't let him, so he's been stuck in a small cage for a long time.
So when my sister came down to visit, her pet sugar glider of 7 years DIED on the drive down and she was feeling extremely sad about the entire thing. So we agreed to give her Collin Ferret (Ten points if you get the reference).
Now he's happier than ever in North Carolina, fighting off two cats, a doberman, and a german shepard mix. 8D

Anyway, I've recently been missing not having a small animal around. I love my cat dearly, but I also can't take him to college with me next year!
So I've been kind of looking into small animals I'll be able to easily take care of.

I need suggestions!
Criteria:
Small cage, not much more than a 20 gallon tank.
I'd prefer to avoid heat lamps, but I love reptiles.
Not TOO much work. I don't want to be cleaning the cage out twice a day.
I'd like an animal that will not crap on you when you hold it. If it does, I'd never play with it. D:
Any animal except spiders and birds (too loud).
I'd like to avoid a horrible stench, please note: I'm used to the ferret stench, which isn't bad.

I've been looking into Leaopard Geckos and Robo hamsters, they seem to fit the critera, but I know little about both!
