"Rosmerta, I'm sorry to disturb you..." My voice is higher than how I meant. She looks around to find who is talking, among the people crowding her pub. "Look down here, Rosmerta. It's undrinkable. Thank you, anyway."
I leave the money on the counter and make my way to the door, that sour flavour still in my mouth.
Everything is going bad, and the school year has just started! Those clouds, for example. It is going to rain, no doubt.
And they call it: Sun day!
"Goldstein, being a Prefect doesn't involve snogging other Prefects. I'll tell your Head of House, Miss Abbott!"
She turns to look at me. "Well, Professor, it was her who suggested I let myself go. She says that when an eagle falls in love with a badger there's no way out."
The girl is outspoken, there is no question.
"And if the badger falls for a snake?" I say to myself.
This is the sour taste in my life. Horace is back, and 'Mona has only eyes for him.
Look down here, I'd like to tell her, look at me. Sweeten my existence.
"It was black cherry. I am really sorry, Professor Flitwick."
"Hum?" The students are on their way back to the castle, following her. The pub is almost empty now, and Rosmerta stands just outside the entrance.
"Your drink, I mean. It was black cherry syrup. I was confused, and... I could prepare you another. For free, of course."
It would be useless, wouldn't it? Everything is wrong today, and tomorrow, and the day after...
"Come on, Filius, can't you see it's going to rain? We'll get soaked, if we don't hurry!"
She is waiting for me... and I almost run to her, forgetting the clouds, the sourness, and all the shadows I thought to see.
All I can feel is a taste of hope.
