A great one, playing on re-writing the past,.. Love the intricate elements of the story, first meeting, relationship, love and... trust...

Thank you! When I was writing this, I thought you might like that aspect. :-D And it had the extra advantage of involving an alternate "first time". However, I was worried that it might be awkward to read and I'm still not totally happy with having to put so much in italics to show what was being read, but I couldn't come up with another solution.

I really like this one, John's AU, his re-imagining of his and Sherlock's developing relationship. The way you use canon and then just let us see it differently is quite wonderful. And I like the way it gives Sherlock and John an opportunity to comment on their own relationship in a way they couldn't normally do, it's a fascinating approach and I think it really works.

I also like the way it starts as a tease, and gets more serious as it goes along as John reveals his own regrets and the way he takes guilt on himself for things that did or didn't happen. And what a thought provoking ending, John has forgiven everything, but that doesn't mean he's forgotten and that it doesn't still hurt--and Sherlock is starting to understand what he's done.

Absolutely lovely work!

I am so pleased you thought the change from almost playful to almost grim was plausible. I had a lot of anxiety about that. Equally relieved that you thought the device wasn't too contrived. I did think it was the sort of thing John might do to release some of the emotional stress of keeping hope alive without support from anyone else because everyone, except Mike and Molly, were encouraging him to "move on".

When I wrote the final two scenes, (which I did after I wrote the first half), I had wanted the reader to think, while reading the penultimate scene, that the action was taking place and then in the final scene realise that Sherlock was reading another of John's "fics". However, I thought the whole story would be too difficult to read if I didn't put John's writing in italics and so the next to last scene had to be in italics. (I thought, anyway.)

Thank you, as always, for taking such a careful look at what I come up with! ♥

You write things that are worth looking at carefully :)

I just wanted to say I'm glad you're back, I was a bit worried since you usually answer comments right away. I hope it was just the general demands of RL!

it was indeed RL rushing back in after the holidays. Slowly catching up on things, including all the stories in the various exchanges. I'm woefully behind, but making some progress. :-D

I love John's version of how it should have been, and just the idea of him re-writing history like this is brilliant. And they're so completely in tune with each other too, and yet still careful of one another. Gorgeous - thank you.

I'm so pleased you liked the idea. John is left in such a state, I needed to invent some solace. In the ACD stories, he had that, but in Sherlock there is nothing to soften the impact, but his own fortitude. Of course, series three may indeed introduce Mary, but even then he would have experienced the "death" alone.

Thank you! ♥
