One Way or Another
by sakesushimaki

Justin doesn’t believe in fate or destiny.

The only thing he does believe in is that If one door closes, another one opens saying. And even that only sometimes.

So, when Ted and Emmett start up again on how amazing it is that they came to the ticket window right when they started giving out freebees, and that that only happened because Ted had had to stop for gas, which then led them to the event of Emmett having found his dream pants last week which they only carried in his exact size and of which they only had one pair left, Justin decides to zone out for a bit.

He sips on his beer and plays with a toothpick wrapper and wonders how much longer Brian’s going to keep up his 14-hour work days of late. Three more days, tops, and then he’s going to point out their - albeit minor - downturn in sex. That should help put things into perspective.

“Oh my god, you’re right! If I hadn’t eaten oatmeal that day instead of my usual bagel on the go, and if I wouldn’t have had to stop at that traffic light that is usually always on green, I would’ve been too early to…”

Justin decides to get another drink. Woody’s is packed tonight and he has to wait a while.

He’s startled, but only for a second, when a mouth suddenly attaches itself to his neck and two warm hands rub across his stomach. He reaches a hand back, fingers sliding into dark hair, and breathes him in. “Hey.”

The mumble in his neck tickles a bit. “Order me a beer? I’m gonna take a leak.”

Justin finally returns to their table, two beers in hand. When Brian gets back from the bathroom, he undoes his tie and folds it into his pocket. He looks a bit tense, yes, tired, logically, but Justin also sees that twinkle in his eyes.

“Good day?” he asks, taking a sip from his beer.

Brian freaking wiggles his eyebrows at that.

Yeah, he definitely had a successful day - must be a big client. Justin chuckles and leans over for a little kiss, but Brian hooks an arm behind his head, drags him in so he almost falls off his stool and smacks their lips together soundly.

“Uh-huh.” Justin shoves him away and turns back to their friends. Ted is busy not gawking at a few passers-by but Emmett blinks and stares at Brian and him. “What?” Justin mumbles, wondering what the hell could be coming now.

“Do you guys realize that-” Emmett is interrupted by a groan. After a quick glare into Brian’s direction, he proceeds, “Do you realize that if you hadn’t been walking down the street at that exact moment, you never would’ve met?”

Justin rubs his forehead. “Em, really, that-”

“No no, stop right there!” Emmett holds up his hand. “Don’t belittle the fates with your negative vibes. You’ll realize soon enough. Right, Teddy?”

“Huh? Oh yeah, sure.”

“I like your vibes, Sunshine,” Brian murmurs into Justin’s ear, his hand grabbing for his crotch.

Justin rolls his eyes. “Really? I swear, Brian, sometimes I have no idea how you make a fortune writing up copies.”

Brian just growls and bites his ear.

Later in bed, fresh from a quite spectacular shower fuck preceded by more ridiculous innuendos, Justin can’t put his mind at rest.

“I feel stupid bringing this up now, but Emmett was kind of right, you know?”

“Huh?” Brian is already half asleep.

“If I hadn’t been right there and you hadn’t come out of Babylon at that exact moment, we really would’ve missed each other.”

Justin feels even more stupid now because there’s actually a hint of panic unfolding in his head at the thought.

Brian’s going to make fun of him for days now. There’s no such thing as fate, Justin knows this.

But obviously Brian doesn’t feel like mocking Justin quite yet, because he pulls the duvet up a bit higher, reaches for Justin’s arm and tugs until Justin is pressed to his back. Yawning, already passing out, he mumbles, “You're tenacious. You would’ve found me one way or another.”

Justin blinks into the darkness and listens to Brian’s breathing even out.

Well, when he put it like that.
