I guess childhood effects vary, and mine's doubtless made me a different person, too, but I've found much more evidence that the present you is a more powerful sculptor than the past you. You are not chained to past events. You are stronger than that. Things fail, and when you don't want them to affect you, you have to believe that you have the power to untangle yourself from them and decide you won't let them define who you are.
A bit of escapism is allowed if you think you're too mired in bad events to see anything good. But when you come back, surround yourself with things that you want to affect you and approach them with confidence.
Hugs and strength to you. And don't be a stranger. =)
If I had actual coping skills, I'd be using them, but chat is often helpful. As is obsessively making perfect the one little thing currently possible to control. And I like St. John's Wort, but read up on it first.
