Chapter #13

“Wow, Luke this is an amazing place,” Patrick told him as he and Angus wandered through the bookstore.  They had come earlier in the week but Luke hadn’t been with them. “I love the sign out front too, it reminds me of the one from the movie studio, and I love the name “The Boy in the Moon Bookstore”.

“Thank-you Patrick, I was one of those kids with his head always in a book.  It was my way of escaping and I don’t know how many times my mom told me to “Come back to earth Luke”, Luke explained and Angus shook his head.

“I wish everyone would have the same enthusiasm for books Luke.  You’re brave to start a business selling books with all the competition from the electronic copies,” Angus told Luke seriously and Luke nodded.

“I know, my mom thought I was crazy, but my dad and grandmother supported my idea,” Luke told Angus honestly,” But I tried to make this more than the big box bookstores.  I have a wide selection of odd genre’s and I have reading programs throughout the week and even a writing group,” Luke added and Angus and Patrick smiled at Luke’s determination, “It’s been busy with Reid and I fixing up the house and moving but we’ve had lot’s of help, Harrison has been great Patrick letting me get things organized and Faith of course is running the reading programs for me right now.”

“Hey Luke,” Faith piped up as a bunch of preschoolers came out from the reading area in the back calling good-byes to Faith who was holding Ava’s hand.

“Hello Ava,” Patrick and Angus chorused and the little girl smiled shyly.

“Hi,” she managed to say just above a whisper.

“Mary’s running late so Ava’s going to have lunch with me, right sweetie,” Faith said down to the little girl who nodded, “Ava, do you want some fishy crackers and a glass of milk?” Faith asked her, “Harrison is grabbing us sandwiches from the coffee shop.”

“Yes please,” Ava nodded and Faith lead her towards the back office, “I’ll take Holly over to Mary’s after work and we’ll stay there tonight so you can enjoy the bachelor party for Scott,” Faith called over her shoulder to Luke.

“Thanks Faith, enjoy your girls spa night,” Luke told her and headed out with Angus and Patrick.

Angus and Patrick had spent the past week meeting up with old friends and touring the Cape visiting their favourite places.  They had made themselves at home with Luke and Reid, cooking and helping out to unpack more of Reid and Luke’s books.  The library/office was filled with floor to ceiling shelves and now they had been filled with books.  Neuroscience, medical journals and science fiction novels on Reid’s designated shelves and Luke’s had an assortment of fiction, non-fiction and books about writing.

“So how will you manage all of this during the busy summer months?” Patrick inquired as they headed to Kits’ to try on their new suits,” Will you still run the reading programs?”

“I plan to just run my writing group on Wednesday night, Kit’s niece Brianna is planning to be an elementary teacher and she’s home from college so she’ll be running the summer reading programs for me.  Mary is the leader of the Friday night book club so that will give me time to write myself this summer.  I plan to hire someone on full-time for a few of the weekdays and weekends this fall so I can still write and spend time with Reid on his weekends off,” Luke explained as they walked into Henderson’s Fine Menswear the bell above the door announcing their arrival.

“Hey gentlemen, ready for your final fitting,” Kit asked coming from the back office looking a tad flushed.  A somewhat tousled looking Barrett Jones came behind him, trying to smooth down his messed hair and subtly checking that the buttons on his shirt were tied up correctly.”

“Are we too early?” Patrick asked looking back and forth between the two men who both ducked their heads.

“Uhm, no, of course not,” Kit reassured him, “Barrett was just leaving, he just stopped by for an early lunch,” Kit added quickly.

“Is that what they’re calling it now?” Angus said under his breath and Luke bit his lip to stop from smiling.

Barrett shook his head, “I’m too old for this,” and he leaned over giving Kit a firm kiss, “Catch you later babe, gentlemen, I’ll see you at Sophia’s later,” and he walked out Kit watching after him with a huge smile on his face.

“Okay gentlemen,” he finally dragged his gaze from the fine form of his boyfriend, “Let’s get you guys fitted and back home to prepare for the bachelor party.”

“Hot, Mr. Snyder, you are seriously hot,” Reid told him as he walked into their bedroom.  He waggled his brows at Luke and leaned in for a kiss, flicking Luke’s nipple that could be seen pushing against the light blue silk shirt that Luke had paired with stylish black dress pants.  Reid resisted the urge to run his tongue down Luke’s neck and to the light brown hair poking out from the top of his shirt where he’d left the top two buttons open.

“Stop,” Luke told him pointing to the bathroom, “We’re supposed to be at Sophia’s in half an hour.”

“Gentlemen! Welcome!” a beaming Vinnie DiCarlo said as Luke, Reid, Angus and Patrick stepped into the restaurant.

“Vincenzo!” Angus and Patrick chorused.

“You’re looking younger than ever,” Angus told him grasping Vinnie on the shoulder and giving him a warm handshake.

“Angus, Patrick, it’s wonderful to see you too.  I see that retirement is doing you both well, you two look great,” Vinnie smiled with fondness at the two men who’d helped him through his own son’s coming out.  Being from a very traditional Italian family Vinnie hadn’t liked the thought of his son not carrying the family name.   Angus and Patrick assured Vinnie that now it would be fine for a gay couple to adopt or even find a surrogate.
Now with Tony settled down with Marcus and his lovely granddaughter Julia and grandson, baby Dario he was a very happy and proud Nonno.

“Angus, Patrick, welcome back to the Cape, I’m so happy to see you both,” Sophia DiCarlo swept in and the men both hugged and kissed her on each cheek, “I’ve made your favourites tonight ending with my famous tiramisu,” she promised and both men groaned at the thought of all that food.

“Scott, our guest of honour!” Vinnie call out as Scott walked in with Alex and Jeff, followed by Tony and Marcus.  Barrett and Kit came in a few minutes later along with Casey and Harrison and some of Scott’s friends from his construction work.

They gathered in one of the back rooms starting with breads and plates of antipasto.  As usual Reid declined the wine preferring to drink San Pellegrino with lime.  He knew that Luke wouldn’t mind if he had a few glasses of wine but he realized that he could still enjoy himself without the alcohol.  Scott was definitely enjoying himself, drinking wine and letting his friends tease him about finally settling down with Bridget.  He wasn’t getting any younger and neither was Bridget.

“Give me a break guys, remember Bridget wasn’t even living here for ten years and well I was a real ass to her before she left,” Scott admitted and everyone agreed.

Bridget and Scott had been close all through high school and she was the one who pulled him through when the Oliver’s died suddenly.  But as it always happened with the Oliver’s they treated the ones they loved the worse.  Scott was no exception, and when Bridget came back to the Cape after college Scott treated her terribly.  He’d been sleeping around with many women and Bridget hadn’t been impressed.

They hadn’t actually committed to each other but Bridget had hoped that once she returned to the Cape that they could start the relationship that she was looking for with Scott.  Scott could admit he was a complete bastard to her and had been afraid of a full commitment and relationship. He was too young and Bridget had gone away and grown up but he hadn’t.  Scott was still scared of loving someone and then losing them like his parents.

Bridget had been offered a position with a large advertising agency in New York City when she graduated but she had told them no.  But a few months later heartbroken she called them back and the position was still available.  She packed her bags, said her goodbyes and headed to New York.  Then just over ten years later she returned to find her good friend Ginny Oliver back with baby Holly.  Ginny had asked her if she’d partner with her in a coffee shop and Bridget jumped at the chance.

Scott was not too sure where he and Bridget stood, but she was friendly and Scott was happy that they could at least be friends.  It had been a few months before Ginny got sick that the two found themselves together on New Year’s Eve and they slowly began to see one another.  They hadn’t told anyone yet when Ginny was diagnosed and then life was crazy.

Scott looked around the table of men, the couples and his other friends with wives and children.  He was now finally going to be one of them; a husband, partner and he hoped a father.   Losing Ginny tore him apart and as with his parents Bridget had held him together.  At first he wasn’t sure he could risk his heart and lose Bridget but then he realized that his choice all those years ago made him lose her anyway.

Now years later he was making the right choice, he was going to love Bridget and the family they had now and the family still to come.  Scott wanted what his Uncle Angus and Patrick had, a lifetime of love and happiness with his best friend.
