Author: TheToastAlchmst (Toasty).
Rating: PG.
Warnings: None. Completely work-safe.
Pairing(s): Gonou/Kanan.
Notes: Prompt #49: On the Threshold- 42 minutes. Yeah, there’s no way I could keep this under thirty minutes. XD Other than epically failing at the time limit, I think this came out rather nicely. It’s bittersweet, and I’m sure you all know why. Anywho, enjoy!

“It isn’t…much, but it’ll do. For now, that is.”

A lively set of green eyes sparkled and turned to look within an equally green, albeit sheepish pair. When her brother had said that they were moving in together, in a place of their own, she couldn’t help but surrender to the happiness that ate into every fiber of her being. Now, she wasn’t expecting a mansion or anything - especially from what little income they received - but the home that stood before them now, small and empty, was far greater than she’d ever dreamed. It was theirs.

“Oh, Gonou!” She beamed and set two delicate hands over her trembling mouth. “It’s perfect!”

A sigh of relief sounded off beside her, followed by a gentle chuckle. “Well, I wouldn’t say ‘perfect’, Kanan, but it’s definitely something,” the younger sibling replied with a shrug. He was surprised to find his face suddenly cupped by the warm palms of his sister’s hands as she pulled his gaze down to her level.

“I love it,” she clarified, standing on tiptoe to set a feathered kiss against his lips. “It’s more than I could have hoped for.”

Gonou couldn’t help but smile the lopsided smile that claimed his features every time his lover decided to shower him with affection. Captivated, he bent his neck and pressed their foreheads together, creating a friendly mesh of chestnut bangs.

“You’re too easy to please,” he murmured, kissing her nose.

Kanan giggled. “Is that a problem? I like simple things.”

It was quiet for a moment before they separated and stared at their abode. It was more of a shack, really, with only one room, a tiny kitchen, and hardly enough space to raise…well, that wasn’t going to happen. Not anytime soon at least.

“Can we go inside?”

The taller twin blinked out of his distraction and looked back at his sister, who was practically bouncing on the balls of her tiny feet. Without warning, and forgoing any explanation at all, long arms swept the young woman within their hold until she resembled a new bride.

And just like any newlywed, Kanan blushed and wrapped her arms around his neck. “This isn’t necessary, silly,” she tittered. “I’m perfectly capable of walking inside on my own.”

“Of course you are,” Gonou agreed, advancing toward the faded front door. “However, I find this method more appropriate. Play along?” His gaze was pleading beneath the reflective lenses of his glasses. He looked like a puppy.

“Oh, fine,” Kanan huffed, her smile widening. “Take me inside, darling.”

“As you wish, dear.”

The door opened and Gonou made to enter the home, though stopped abruptly on the threshold when an odd sensation stabbed him. For a moment, he simply stared at the emptiness that was littered with dust and other aged gloom. Shadowed sunlight bled in past the windowpanes, casting bar-like shadows on the floor that stretched to his feet.

His hold on the woman within his arms tightened.

“Is something the matter?” she asked, removing a hand from his neck to graze the soft skin of his cheek.

He stared for a second longer before he kissed her fingers and relaxed. “Nothing at all,” he assured, closing the door behind him.
