Notes: Prompt: New Year, time taken - wow - 30 minutes, 10 minutes over. Hey! I'm out of practice!
Gojyo leaned on the frame of their back door and watched for several minutes while his cigarette dwindled. Hakkai bustled about and made certain there was a cleared space without any debris. A bucket filled with water was nearby. Finally, Gojyo couldn't take anymore. "Hey, 'Kai, it's just a few fireworks, don't knock yourself out."
Hakkai looked up, his expression bordered on crestfallen and Gojyo knew immediately he'd said the wrong thing. "Oh. Do you think I'm going overboard? It's just that, this New Year is my first year as… Well, I suppose I am being a bit silly."
Aw shit. Gojyo put out his cigarette and ran a hand through his hair.
Their front door flew open and Goku raced inside. "Did you get fireworks?"
Gojyo watched Hakkai's mask fall in place. "Of course, Goku."
"And you cooked?" Goku practically hopped from foot to foot. "You cooked, right?"
Sanzo stepped through the door. "Will you shut up!"
"Well, looky who's here." Gojyo stood up, relieved for the interruption. "Don't you have to do monk-things today?"
Glaring at him, Sanzo lit a cigarette but didn't speak. He turned to Goku. "Let's get this over with."
"Aww, Sanzo, don’t be like that! You promised."
"Shut the fuck up!"
"Well, the food is ready. I suppose we could eat."
"Yay!"
After demolishing the mountain of food and burning through the pile of fireworks, Goku finally gave in to Sanzo's insistence they go home. After the two left, Gojyo thought their place seemed loudly silent. He sat in lawn chair next to Hakkai with a beer in his hand and gazed at the little patch of yard. Even thought it was winter, the evening was warm and mild. Paper lanterns of every color hung from strategically placed wire and swayed in a gentle breeze. A long table decorated with red silk cloth, held the remnants of their feast and a large punch bowl filled with water hosted a handful of floating lights. Hakkai had really made the night… comforting and far different from any other New Year Gojyo had ever celebrated.
After a moment Hakkai spoke, "Wasn't it remarkable how Goku actually talked Sanzo into burning sparklers?"
"Yeah, and he wasn't even yellin' about it. I think the surly bastard was even enjoying himself." Gojyo took a drink of his beer. "You know, you made the monkey very happy tonight."
"Yes, he did seem rather pleased." Hakkai turned to him. "Did you get enough food tonight?"
"Sure, um..." Gojyo took another drink of his beer and then picked at the bottle's label. "Sorry about earlier, 'Kai, sometimes I can be a real dick."
Hakkai gazed at him and chuckled. "Not at all, Gojyo. Now that I think about it, I have been taking the New Year a bit too seriously."
"Nah, not really." Gojyo stared at their yard and suddenly, his ramshackle house was a home. "Well, I'm glad you’re here."
After tipping his own beer, Hakkai asked, "Why is that?"
"Umm, 'cause…" Why was that? Because Gojyo's house was now their home? Because Hakkai was the first person in long time that gave a rat's ass about Gojyo? Because Gojyo wasn't so lonely anymore? What could he say that didn't make him sound like a total sap?
Hakkai watched Gojyo struggle. Finally, a real smile lit up his features and he chuckled.
Gojyo frowned. "Are you fucking with me?"
"Maybe." Hakkai's good eye twinkled in the lantern light. "A little."
All right, so maybe he deserved it, but shit. "You can be a smug bastard, you know that?"
"Yes," Hakkai nodded. "Sometimes, I can."
"Well. I think it's going to be a great year." Gojyo held up his beer. "Happy New Year, 'Kai."
Hakkai gave him another smile, raised his own beer and clinked their bottles together. "Happy New Year, Gojyo."
