So. Apparently there's a NewWho rewatch going on at a cool-looking comm and I'm missing it. And I could, I suppose, just jump in and do Aliens of London and skip the early ones, but I really want to do them all, so I'm gonna do that anyway, and just post the ones I miss over here. (If my housemates are reading this and wondering why I'm not doing this rewatch with you, it's mostly cos it involves plenty of pausing while I type things, and going back over scenes and all that, and it'd be really annoying to be in the room with me, so. Yes. Sorry.)

Also, it'll mean I'm actually posting, and that can only be good, right? XP

Okay. I'm not good at doing reaction posts and reviews and such, mostly cos I have trouble remembering after the episode what all the things were I really wanted to talk about. So what I'm about to try now is to watch the DVD and just type. (And probably pause as I go so I don't miss things while I'm typing about other things.) Sort of like a liveblog, only very not live, cos I've seen most of these a bajillion times anyway, especially when I get to season 2. XD

So first up, Rose. Also, random spoilers for The Big Bang and Last of the Time Lords. And, oh yeah. I love Rose Tyler. If that's going to bother you, you might as well skip anything I write about RTD's whole run.

So, first time with the new (well, they were then) titles. Still love those to bits, that blue and that red and the hints of green and the vortex being all swirly lines and such.

"Rose", in which our intrepid heroine meets our itinerant hero and a journey begins.

Zoom-in to the Earth from space - supposedly this echoes an old ep? Spearhead From Space, I think people have said, but I've not seen it yet... Nice, anyway. And into London, and the fast-forward of Rose's workday, and ooh, shop-dummies, LOVE those shots of shop-dummies all over the place that old fans might pick up and new viewers wouldn't get until she goes down to the basement - and Mickey being an idiot and Rose looking like she really hates her job. And then she goes down to the creepy basement and walks around for a bit and, ooh - door-slam, is that the Autons - VERY nice creepy shots and the slow creaking movements are a bit horror-movie and of COURSE she thinks it's a joke. I really like that she doesn't scream here - she's scared, but she's self-possessed.

And the first we see of Nine is his hand grabbing hers, and there's something just really NICE about that, not sure why. And the "run". Perfect first word. And then he's forcing her to think, in the lift, to show him how she reasons, perfect companion-auditioning scene, which is odd when he doesn't, at this point, mean to take her with him.

"Don't tell anyone about this, cos if you do, you'll get them killed." Ouch. Very rough and abrupt, is our Nine, and of course we start to find out why next ep.

And then Rose runs past the Tardis! First appearance of The Doctor's Theme and all.

Jackie milking the melodrama, and Mickey - ooh - both supportive and a little bit selfish at the same time, I rather love that, it's cute. And nice bit of domestic before, ha, there he is, accidentally at her house.

Oh, god, Jackie, stop! "Anything could happen." "No." XDDD

"He's gay and she's an alien." Gay Agenda, woot!

And, oh, this is definitely just post-regeneration, not just the mirror, but he's seeing if he can still do card-tricks!

Nice evasions there, Nine. "Just passing through." And the 'sort of, yeah', the repetition, that's another cute bit.

"Do you believe me?" "No." "But you're still listening." Rose is so much easier to deal with than Pond. XD Mind you, he didn't abandon Rose for 14 years, either.

"Do you know like we were saying? About the Earth revolving? It's like when you're a kid. The first time they tell you that the world's turning, and you just can't quite believe it cos everything looks like it's standing still. - I can feel it. The turn of the Earth. The ground beneath our feet is spinnin' at a thousand miles an hour and the entire planet is hurtling round the sun at 67,000 miles an hour, and I can feel it. We're falling through space, you and me, clinging to the skin of this tiny little world, and if we let go.... That's who I am."

And here's the first demat, but we only HEAR it, we see him walk towards the Tardis and then we're following Rose through the rest of the scene, and that slow build-up is brilliant.

Clive! I feel so bad for Clive. He's been tracking the Doctor for so long, and then he never even gets to see him! "That's your Doctor there, isn't it?" Suggests he's got pictures of the others, too? I like the darkness in this scene, too, because it's true - being anywhere near the Doctor is incredibly dangerous, and always has been.

The Autons really suck at copying Mickey. Maybe it's the lack of armour, they share Amy's love for Romans. That Rose doesn't notice makes me think they probably should never have been together. Though she doesn't recognise the Doctor's voice when he shows up with the champagne either, so maybe she just has the dumb today.

Ah, threat of plastic kicks her brain into gear and she hits the fire-alarm, good old Rose!

Aha! "Let's go in here".

And she has to run around the whole thing and I'm so glad the director remembered to have her do that, and CONSOLE ROOM!!!!! I miss the coral so much, it's my favourite Tardis layout....

And Rose is a bit freaked out now, like she should be, and Nine's "nononono" when the signal fades, so frantic, and so angry about it because he's scared.

Antiplastic is so hokey. Doesn't matter though, works well enough for Who, and it's not the point of the ep. Companion-acquiring is the point, and Rose is proving herself beautifully, London Eye and all.

*pauses for a stray thought* I wonder, if they'd killed Mickey off in this ep, would any of the fans have protested? Did anyone like him yet? ...good thing they left him alive, though, considering.

"I'm not here to kill it. I have to give it a chance." Sets the tone there forever, pretty much. And then he goes all formal diplomacy-ish with the Nestene Consciousness, seconds before "shunt off". XD

"I fought in the war, it wasn't my fault! I couldn't save your world, I couldn't save any of them!" And here we get the darkness from the other side, the Doctor's pain and guilt... I forget how good a first ep this is until I watch it again. It's got everything we need to start off with.

And the NC says "Time Lord", which won't mean anything to Rose yet -

And here she goes, moment of glory! "I've got the bronze!"

"Now we're in trouble." Quoted just for that grin as he says it. And Rose is grinning as she backs into the Tardis too, and I'm starting to think maybe she really would have stayed forever, she loves this so much already. And then she can't talk to her mum - needs to hear her voice, know she's okay, yeah, but she can't talk because... it's too big, I suppose. Too much to try and come down yet to a level where she can think about being normal and dealing with normal things or trying to make Jackie understand...

Oh... even after the "always this dangerous", she starts to move, doesn't she, towards the Tardis? And it's only cos Mickey grabs her that she stays... And she doesn't look happy or relieved at all, she never was staying out of any kind of caution or fear, which makes me like this scene just that little bit more now.

And of course he comes back, and she runs off to have her Really Great Year, and oh, Rose, right now you look the happiest you've ever looked. *snuggles Rose*

Next up: The End of the World. Featuring Madam Hooch, Captain Jack's head, a bloke in the wrong shade of blue paint, and some alien we've never seen again and who does nothing in the ep but who got into the papers pre-launch anyway. Oh, and the Earth in its Final, Absolutely No-Repeats, Seriously-The-Last-We-Really-Really-Mean-It Performance.

No teaser in this one, interestingly. Just the titles and straight in - and a straight ep trailer instead of a season trailer. I'll have to check the season openers when we get there...

And no Bad Wolf that I spotted. But there doesn't need to be one here.
