The Damned: Hunters

They walked down the dark alley, dodging light and sticking to the shadow. Behind them a rumpled mass lay motionless, cold and lifeless. The blonde man licked the deep red liquid from his lips before his tongue disappeared between two sharp teeth. As they moved they made no noise, their feet seemed to float over the wet pavement. They made a right turn in unison and picked up their pace as they neared a black sedan.

A small pebble bounced across the asphalt to their right. They all froze in place, their senses on full alert for any signs of danger. A flash of movement and a slight hiss marked their hunter’s first move. One of the three dropped to the ground, his head detaching and rolling a short distance away. The two remaining made a break for the car. A burst of automatic rifle fire sounded from off to the left and one of the two fell to his knees, his pale pupils rolling to the back of his head. Somewhere in the distance a dog barked. The one remaining made a lounge for the vehicle, but only a few feet from freedom a dark shadow intercepted his route and interjected itself between the beast and its escape. Cornered and outnumbered, the creature stumbled to the ground. Looking up at his stalker, his mind raced for an escape route. With one closing from behind, one from the left, and the demon before him, all seemed lost. When he met his pursuer’s eyes he knew all was lost, for there was no mercy to be seen in the fiery redness that met his gaze. The final sight the blonde one saw was the flash of the heavy metal blade as it arced through the air and into the side of his neck.

A large black man in dark camouflage fatigues bounded from the darkness, a machine gun slung over his shoulder, and slapped the smaller man on the shoulder. A large grin spread across his face as he addressed his companion.

“Nice moves, Ace. Couldn’t have gone smoother.”

“She wasn’t with them.”

“We’ll find her, don’t worry about it.”

“Yeah.”

“Luke!” a feminine voice called from behind. “Man, what a fight. It was over before they knew what hit them.”

“Yeah, sorry you didn’t get any action Sara, I kinda got carried away.”

“Well, at least you didn’t steal all the glory. I saw Gabe mow down the second one,” Sara said.

“Quiet! What’s that sound?” Luke hissed.

A dark shadow swept over the ground, encapsulating the three in a sphere of darkness. Luke began to sink through the floor, and in desperation he thrust his sword into the darkness beneath. The blade struck concrete and fell from his hands. An instant later he was gone. The shadow subsided.

“Luke!”

“Father!”
