Day 31: Least favorite overused BL manga plot device

Rape leading to love... bloody hate it.

Oh dear sweet fuck, how I hate this plot device.

This is something that happens in a lot of the BL manga I've read. In fact, I'd go as far as to say that it's happened in most of the BL manga I've read. While I'll tolerate it if it's done well, I still hate it.

I don't know why rape is apparently a way for two people to suddenly become close, you'd think it'd have the opposite effect. Shows how much I know. It's especially hateful with the BL angle on it because, more often than not, the person being raped (or forced, whatever you want to call it) isn't gay at first and then the rape ends up turning him gay. It's quite weird.

Of course, this plot device is especially unwelcome when the two people have just met. For example, Usagi-san and Misaki from Junjou Romantica. The first time they actually meet each other is when Misaki bursts into Usagi-san's room to yell at him and then Usagi-san pretty much molests him. Cut to right after in the next scene and the two of them are sitting in Usagi-san's living room discussing tutoring plans. Then they enter a relationship that has lasted for more than 14 volumes so far. Does anyone else see anything wrong with this picture?

And I know I said that Tyrant is my favorite BL manga, and it is, and that it has rape and forced sex all over the series (except for volumes 4 and 8). However, there is a very big difference in the way that Tyrant handles the rape-to-love plot. In Volume 1, Souichi is raped by Morinaga, but following that Souichi is very emotional about it and tells Morinaga that he never wants to see him again. It wasn't rape and then, boom, Souichi's in love. If that were the case the series wouldn't work as well as it does. Souichi eventually does want Morinaga back in his life, but it's after a few weeks after he's had time to process things. It's just very different with Tyrant.

So yeah, that's the overused plot device I hate the most in BL manga. I suppose there's also rape=love, but I think that's something different... or maybe it isn't... either way I dislike both of them. ESPECIALLY IN THE FINDER SERIES!
