"I saw Anthy in the greenhouse," he says slowly. "She had a black rose in her chest. Her friends were there--River, Kaylee, the French girl, and a woman I didn't know. They were in glass coffins."
"She said the last one was for her."
"I cut the rose off her. I thought--I thought it was the right thing to do. It was like the duels."
He runs a hand across his face.
"When we would duel, you had to cut the roses off. And Wakaba--she had one of those black roses on her chest when she--it changed her. And Anthy was different. I thought if I cut it off, she would be okay."
"She fell down." Like a little boy.
"Mikage was there. I didn't know he was there. Kaylee told me once he was the one who put the black roses on people. He told me I'd hurt her, that I was going to be expelled again. I ran back to Ohtori, then."
"Saionji ...?"

He swallows the words. "Antigone."

"Yes. It's me."
A few steps closer, watching him carefully.
"I'm-- I'm sorry about the fire. I didn't mean it to happen. But ..."
She smiles, faint and hopeful.
"You remember."

He doesn't sound as happy about it.

"I ... I didn't mean for your hair to burn."

Antigone's fingers pluck at fraying threads in her skirt.
"I can ... go. If you like."

And she glances at him, cautiously.
"All right."

He doesn't make any move to go.
"I made a promise."
Reply
(my dear Antigone-- I've broken my word)
And bites her lip.
"I don't know what you did. But whatever it is ... it's no reason for you to stay away forever. I'd never meant to exile you."

"I didn't mean to hurt her."

"What happened?"

"I left you the letter, first."

It sounds like describing a dream ...
"Saionji."
Gentle as she can, though she's still confused.
"You can't have hurt her that way-- not like that."
Her fingers twist in the fabric of her skirt, just for a moment.
"And anyway, even if you did ... you meant to help her."

And then Saionji starts to laugh, and once he starts he can't stop.
