oh and i just went to the greyhound track here in phx. for the first time a few weeks back and it too was so HUGE!!! i loved it though it was like a time warp. free to get in and they have ginger ale on tap. i had a bud in a bottle though and it was exactly as cold as it should be.

there were all these neat ads framed on the walls and old photos from the track. the smokey smell the noises. i enjoyed it very much and didn't bet once.

just wandered.

anyhow.

4 0 4 make a wish.

I love the track
although I've never been to a greyhound track
but the horse track is a wonderful way to spend a day
(and something I haven't done in too long, at least a year)
as a kid, my step-dad used to take me and my brother when we lived in LA
it was very Bukowski, except with a childlike wonder to it
I loved it, the excitement, the dinginess
everyone getting in line to make their bets
the rush before the bell went off
and then yelling and yelling for your horse to win
so much fun, such good memories
and he'd always place a bet or two for us (which, if we won, we'd get to keep the cash and for a 9 year old, on a good day, this could prove VERY lucrative (I think I once won like $60))
then, after the race, my step-dad would take my brother and I to the restaurant where my mom was working, right off the beach
and we'd both get these huge chocolate shakes with sprinkles
life doesn't get much better then that

i've never seen horses race in person.
there is this kubrick film 'the killings' i think ... it just came to mind. much of it centers around a horse track.
if you have not seen it maybe you would enjoy it.

thanks for sharing this story.

and no life doesn't get much better but..
maybe i like to think i can.
if we pay attention just a moment or two longer.

oh i am getting goofy it's 4 23 am here.
you are up bright and early aren't you.

i guess since you are all the way on mars it makes sense.

actually I was up too early
I was able to fall asleep for another hour
but now I'm awake cause I have to be (not cause I want to be)
I need to get to the cafe and work (I love being able to work from "home", although I don't do it often)

I don't think I've seen The Killings
but I know that my uncle owns a copy
I'll borrow it next time I visit him

when I was a young lad, I used to stay up all night and paint
those were also great times
watching (or at least reading about) your work patterns always reminds me of those times
great times
although you're paintings are much better
I hope they're going well

btw, I'm thinking about going to the Neue Galerie this weekend
http://www.neuegalerie.org/neuemain.html
cause I'm a sucker for German art (and Austrian)
not sure I'm going to find time, but it's been a while since I've been there, so it's high on my To Do list

It may be crowded because of the new Klimt acquisition (which I'm excited to see).
I agree with the above comment, that you can tell your brothers' personalities from the photos. Nice one.
