Yesterday we had our Super Mario Smash Brothers Tournament at the Library. I was so stressed out about it. What if we had too many come? What if nobody came? What if they came but thought the set-up was lame? What if my borrowed equipment didn’t work? What if my borrowed equipment got broken?

At least I know how to run a double elimination tournament. So that part wasn’t a worry.

Usually when I am stressed out I don’t sleep well. All the questions above and many more keep crowding my mind and won’t let me rest. On Friday night, I was really praying (1) that the tournament would go well, and (2) that I would be able to sleep. I feel like the Lord answered my prayers exactly as requested. How often does THAT happen?

The day didn't start out very well.  The tournament software that I tried to download was for a webserver not a regular computer.  When I went in the meeting room to finish setting up, there was a deranged mouse in the corner.  I say he was deranged because he didn't even run when I came in.  In fact I bent over and picked him up and he didn't move until it was too late.  I opened the back door and flung him as far as I could.  THAT helped release some stress.

After that the day went better.  Twelve guys and a girl showed up for the tournament.  The girl and her boyfriend were experienced tournament gamers.  So they nodded when I said "No items" and they said "And three stock, I assume."  Evidently three lives is the standard, and I had been about to go with timed battles.  Anyway we had a double elimination tournament, which people were pleased about.  I guess most are single elimination.  (I don't like single elimination and won't do one unless limited time makes it the only option.)  After I said, yes, you can use your own controllers, everyone seemed happy with the set-up.

Anyway, the girl from Ohio won the first tournament for complete results go here:  http://ntrls.tsl.state.tx.us/sanger/news-events/lib-news/tournament-results.html/  We started talking about equipment and she said that she had her Wii with her and she volunteered to let us use it.  So we set up a second tournament: Super Mario Smash Brothers Brawl.  This tournament took longer, since we only had one set up, instead of the three Game Cubes.  Most of the guys were more skilled at this game, as well.

After the tournament, all the older guys went away, but five guys stayed and played for about an hour.  Then moms came and dragged three of them away.  Two girls who were too young for the tournament wandered in and so play continued for another hour.  Hope everyone had fun.  I had a blast!

Next time I want it to be better.  I want a PA system and someone to do play-by-play announcing.  I need tournament software so I don't look like I'm in the dark ages with poster board and a Sharpie.  I've got to figure out how to get sound for the video projector.  I need to get some sponsorships so I can have better prizes than candy bars.

Oh, yeah!  Three guys volunteered to help and/or bring equipment to the next tournament!!! YEAAAA!!!!!
