Dear older generation,
How nice that you grew up in a world where getting an education, brushing your hair, wearing a nice skirt, and saying please got you a job. How nice that you could count on a job to give you insurance and promotions over the years. How nice that you live in a world where bonuses actually occur. Where old people die or retire, leaving jobs for the younger people.
It's not like that now. Not for most of us.
So please, don't tell me I'm not doing enough to find a new job. Not when I put out ten or more applications a week, when I'm sick to death of the internet, when I've had to give up passions and dreams to consider accepting some of the dumbest work on the planet, should it come my way. Don't tell me I'm not doing enough when the skills I gained in college are suddenly invalid because they're not backed with a decade of experience. Or when my experiences don't matter because I haven't finished a PhD yet. I's time to step back and acknowledge that the rules have changed. That you prepared me for a world that doesn't exist anymore. It's time to be a little more compassionate. Young people did not pick this economy. We are not the ones in control here.
That would be you.
Love,
your brilliant, unemployed daughters and sons.
