A little ficlet in an AU setting on some stuff that could happen if there had been no kuro-Saga, just good-Saga, and if Shion had lived and Athena had grown up in Sanctuary. ^_^/
It's not crack like my previous ficlet on that setting, by the way, in case you read that one too. XD
This one is (err, a little) more serious. XD
A bit over a thousand words. Fine for all ages.

"Be my horsie ! Be my horsieeee !!"
That leitmotiv had gone on for days and days now, much to their embarrassment and even annoyance.
On one hand, she was their goddess, the one and single being that they all owed loyalty and everything to. Absolutely any of her orders was sacred for them, and not a single of these men would have hesitated a second to sacrifice their lives if such was her wish.
But on the other hand, she was also a child, still growing and still learning to balance her divine nature with her human host’s more childish sides that she couldn’t shake off as well yet, for lack of experience.
Only a very select amount of people, the elite of the gold saints, was allowed to see the young goddess, under the Kyoukou Shion’s supervision. Most often, said elite was composed only of Gemini Saga and Sagittarius Aiolos, in charge of part of the young goddess’ classical education.
Partially because it wasn’t given to anyone to receive the honor of being allowed in the company of a divine being, but partially also because her puerile sides were better kept secret, and might instill shock or even distrust in warriors trained since their early years to fight for her. The Kyoukou feared that she would lose some of her aura of mystery and some of their adoration if they saw her chasing Saga around the gardens yelling at him to get on his four for her.
Which the Gemini saint was going to comply to, the very first time she asked him, had Shion not interrupted them.
No matter how humiliating the idea of such a game could be for a gold saint, Athena’s orders were impossible to refuse. Every time, it took the old Kyoukou and the young Gemini saint - or occasionally the Sagittarius saint, but for some reason she didn’t request that from him as often as from Saga - quite a lot of time and pedagogy to tweak her attention into something else, or convince her that another game would be more fun.
Shion had to expressly order the two gold saints to not ever play horse for her, on danger of terrible retaliations should they break his interdict.
He was still the representant of the goddess on earth, but despite his age and authority, his orders had barely enough weight to keep the situation somewhat under control, given that both him and the young saints knew well that should she order it directly and not change her mind, they would have no choice but obeying.
It wasn’t for the young men’s reputation that Shion feared, but in his old-fashioned mind, the image of their goddess - at any age - wrapping her tights around a man’s waist and making bucking motions horrified him to no end.
It didn’t matter that it was just an innocent game, there would still be contact between her most intimate parts, which were to remain pure forever, since Athena is a virgin goddess -- Parthenos -- and the saint’s bodies, something that wasn’t to ever be allowed or forgiven, no matter how fleeting such contact would be, or that it would only happen through robes, fabric, Cloth of any of the such.
And the motions! The possible motions of that game! Simply picturing that image made Shion shudder in horror, shivers of disgust crawling over his ancient skin.
Which is why the old Aries saint couldn’t help but have a moment of panic when he neared the gardens that afternoon, and heard all the way from the vine covered archway the young goddess’s virginal laughter, so filled with joy that he could only think that one of the two had given in to her wishes and submitted himself to the game.
Running in the direction of the crystal-clear sound, Shion reached the large flowerbeds and found himself staring at an unexpected scene.
Sitting on one of the marble benches, Saga watched protectively over the young goddess, who played with a young cat, not quite a kitten anymore but still small, agitating several toys made of feathers tied at the end of strings, thin leather straps and other similar things, while running around and giggling at the cat’s attempts to catch the toys.
Noticing the arrival of their leader, Saga stood, making a reverence, and Shion motioned for him to be at ease, before sitting on the bench next to were the gold saint was a second ago.
"What is that, Saga?"
"A kitten, my lord."
"I can see so much. I meant what it is doing in the gardens?" - It wasn’t reprehension as much as curiosity that seeped through the old man’s voice.
"A few months ago, it was but a tiny kitten when it arrived at the Gemini temple, and I’ve been feeding it since then, so it grew accustomed to people. There are many stray cats in Sanctuary." - Unsure whether Shion was displeased by his initiative or not, the Gemini saint hesitated, sliding a hand through his hair before continuing. "I thought...I thought that our goddess would be amused by it, so I made some toys for it and brought it as a gift for her. Have I done bad, your highness?"
The little girl was now giggling breathlessly, running in circles dragging the toys behind her while the kitten ran too, trying to catch back. Her laughter filled the garden so completely that it seemed to echo on the flower beds, on the trees and the smaller hills punctuated here and there with vestiges of the older buildings, columns and remains of crumbled marble walls bleached white by time and the greek sun.
The joy that filled her cosmo entirely flowed in the very air surrounding them, and deeply touched the hearts of the two saints.
The older man couldn’t help but smile.
“Not at all. You did very, very well, Saga.”
And to their joy and relief, the young goddess forgot completely about her horse playing ideas. Rather than the young saints, the newly arrived kitten was now her new victim, one day made to wear doll clothes, other days taking dance lessons with her in the gardens, other days made to pull a carriage with dolls, and generally harassed constantly by the little girl.
Despite all the things she did to him, the kitten never got hurt, and never ever lifted a claw against his young torturer, either because he realized she was but a child too, or because he had been well-trained by Saga and recognized her divine nature, perhaps.
Watching over her games from underneath the shadowed archway that was now covered in rosebuds with the approach of the summer, Shion, Aiolos and Saga contemplated the scene.
“I’m so glad that she is happy, but the poor cat…” - It was Aiolos, who had taken a particular liking to the little animal since he heard it came from Saga.
“It is a necessary evil.” Shion was laconic, but smiled with a satisfied face while he watched the young goddess hug the kitten tightly and run around the bushes with him squirming in her arms.
Saga just smiled softly, chasing to the back of his mind a tinge of regret that the goddess had been so fast to drop her interest for him and replace him with the kitten.
