Kuro-Saga
Saga turned around sharply. "Who's there?"
"When your ambition to take over the world and kill Athena failed, you chose suicide to pay for your crimes."
"I did. What of it?"
Saga walked around the Gemini temple. The voice was his brother's, and the words were his as well. But Kanon had sworn fealty to Athena and redeemed himself in the war against Hades. Never in all his years had he dreamed that Kanon would change, turn from evil and fight for good. They had exchanged such words before, when Kanon believed Saga a renegade sworn to Hades and Saga believed Kanon to be deceiving Athena with his false loyalty.
"What about me? Am I not a Saint of Athena?" asked the voice.
Saga's brow furrowed. He quickened his pace to a large mirror. As he had feared, the image of Kuro-Saga stood before him. His hair was as black as his soul, and the fiery red eyes burned.
"You!" Saga scowled. "I thought I had killed you."
"No, you killed yourself." Kuro-Saga reached out to the mirror. Then he drew his hand back and clenched it into a tight fist. "Saga, I am not you!"
"No, you're not," Saga said as calmly as he could. "Nor will you ever be me. I will not fall prey to your dark temptations."
"Temptations?" Kuro-Saga repeated angrily. "I do not offer temptation; I seek redemption!"
"Don't make me laugh," Saga snorted. "You? You are evil incarnate." His eyes narrowed. "Leave."
"And go where?" Kuro-Saga shouted. "Shall I bury myself in the depths of your soul, waiting to be reborn or to reincarnate as yet another devil? Let me out! I want to do penitence for my crimes."
Saga laughed. "Do you really think I would be tricked into granting you your freedom?" Saga turned away from the mirror.
"Saga!"
Saga ignored him. He walked away quickly. It would've been ideal if the night air was cool and refreshing. Instead, it was damn hot and humid. Breathing was an effort, but he tried to convince himself it was not because of his unexpected encounter with his evil self. Blood sucker. Saga swatted the mosquito away and rubbed the sweat from his temples.
Saga looked to Star Hill, where it had all began. I am not you, he whispered quietly to himself. At first, he was reluctant to go to the top of Star Hill, but then he decided to face his fears. He was not evil. He was a loyal Saint of Athena. He had no evil impulses, not the slightest. He never playfully stole food from his brother's plate. He always asked and included a please. Kanon had teased him for it.
"Here is where you slew the Pope," Saga said, knowing that Kuro-Saga was still somewhere, still listening.
"Yes." Kuro-Saga looked out over Sanctuary. "I did not mean to give Hades the upper hand. If I had succeeded in killing Athena, perhaps the world would now be plunged in Eternal Darkness." He rested a hand over his heart. Was this darkness within him also eternal?
"No," Saga said bluntly. "Every day, we serve Athena. Every day, we atone for our sins."
"You do, not me." Kuro-Saga pulled off his cape and threw it into the air. He rent the Gemini armor from his body.
"Saga!"
Saga turned and saw reflected in the Pope's red-violet eyes the image of Kuro-Saga leaping from Star Hill.
"I'm sorry," Kuro-Saga said softly and closed his eyes.
