Cemetery
Breathlessly we stood together
after the first summer rain
watching the earth emerge again
in colors all soft brown, light greens and muddy glass
the dark drops on your shoulders and the streaks on my face
betrayed our watchful staying wake
as we moved within and fell silent without
The pool before us was subtly broken by the rain
in gentle, easy bursts
circles arose in my reflection and
stretched slowly outward, touched your face
and hair and legs and eyes
the ripples distorted our unmoving sentinels
moving one into the other
like a master mixing paints
Damp and rough was the birch tree underneath
my fingertips
I felt the slow, steady movement of the wind
as it pulled the tree branches far above back and forth
back... and forth
the world was stopped
and it was ours
and I could feel it in my veins
and with your hand around mine
I know you did too
