Last night I went to a midnight showing of Spiderman 3 with my sister, Sam, Emily and Ellen. We got there roughly forty minutes before the movie was scheduled to start and I was surprised at the mass of people already gathered.

It was a Marquette crowd, so nobody was in costume or carrying banners or anything of that nature. The one exception was a rather short person in a tweed overcoat and a gray Venom mask. He simply stood by The Simpsons pinball machine and when it was time for everybody to go into the theater, he cut in front of my sister. Typical Venom.

I enjoyed the movie, thought it wasn’t as good as Spiderman 2. There were some rather goofy parts in it. Peter Parker, when affected by the symbiote that turns his costume black, is more silly and arrogant than he is angry or evil. When Peter’s personality changes, his hair gets darker, it hangs in his eyes and he starts wearing a hint of mascara. It reminded me of Zoolander more than anything. I wish they had marked this personality change more subtly.

And even in his dark personality, he is still quite dorky. Apparently when Peter gets angry, he dances. Don’t get me wrong, this was very entertaining and I enjoyed those bits, but I think they missed out on showing real facets of Peter’s personality, like anger, jealousy and betrayal that could have served his character better.

There were too many characters as well. The filmmakers tried to pack too much into the movie and plot points and character development that should have been given time were cut short.
I enjoyed the acting and the action sequences were done very well. The film is quite hilarious, sometimes unintentionally as the result of curious dialogue.

I think this should be the last Spiderman movie. It’s showing signs of wear. At least it wasn’t the travesty that was X-Men 3: The Last Bland. That franchise didn’t go down hill, it fell of a cliff. Don’t get me started on this new Fantastic Four movie... even with the Silver Surfer, it’s going to suck donkey balls.
