Dream Boys 2006.

I never have any high expectations towards plays were serious acting is needed. Especially when the actors involved aren't really actors by profession. Same with Dream Boys. At times, too many flashy and showy performances with shiny costumes made it look and feel much more like a Kat-Tun concert, rather than a play with a serious content. Plus the sheer amount of Kame solos. Way over the top there. Some parts were too dragged out and some were too short. Even though it's titled Kat-Tun vs Kanjani8, Kanjani8 has definitely less stage time and it's awfully unfair, since they're just as pretty and talented as Kat-Tun. If not more.

However, that all notwithstanding, the play tells a beautiful and sad tale, a tragedy indeed, of chance meetinsg that change lives forever, of connections, friendship, faith and self-sacrifice. It's all there, if you just look. It's wonderful and it will break your heart a little. I cried.

I can't really complain about anyone's acting (except for the times where i wanted to strangle Kame for his over the top sexual energy, but i suppose that is caused by my own personal feelings and Kame was just doing whatever the director had told him).

Subaru was perfect for the silent and tormented champion with death hanging over his head. Little Yuuta as the kid with an extraordinary sense of justice and a will to live, who will grow up to be the world champion. Ryo as the boxer who so desperately wants to beat Subaru, but realizes that he can never live up to him and that really, it's okay, there are some things that are greater than that. Jin as the guy who tries so hard not to get involved with anything, but still does, because his best friends are involved. For me, Koki and Hina and Yasu really stood out in the background, making their characters real people who you can relate to, giving them personalities and emotions and making you pay attention to them when they were on stage.

Nothing is perfect, but if you overlook the little flaws and exaggerations of this play, it will throughoutly entertain your senses, make you feel sadness alongside with happiness and maybe make you think about life and the people around you, make you cherish them and be thankful for even the passing acquaintances.

It obviously made ME think, otherwise i would never have written such a long review.

kat-tun, kanjani8
