[sob but convenience is everything!!] I've never really had the chance to learn, but I guess it would be a pretty neat skill to have, wouldn't it? That, and since I haven't seen any calculators around here, there would be incentive... [meaning, she'll try and learn it and then stop halfway]

Mhm! They're like abacuses in the way they help solve mathematical equations, except they lead you to the end result in just a few clicks of a button. It's still possible to make mistakes with them, but it's a lot more convenient to use one over an abacus. [...] Ah! ... You've never seen a calculator before? [... How does one explain.] If I ever find one, I could show you how they work, but I'm not very knowledgeable about its mechanics... [There's sheepish laughter on her end.]

Hm, it's kind of like this: you press the number one button, the plus sign, the number one button again, and then the equal sign and you should end up with a number two showing up on the screen. [A short pause.] It works for subtraction, multiplication and division too, amongst other things!
