Yep, an actual journal entry. Mark this, cause it might not happen again for a long time. I woke up today after maybe 8 hours of sleep (that won't happen for a while again either) and then took a bath. Yeah, a bath. It's been a couple of years since I took one of those, and it wasn't hot enough or deep enough (I like to drain every last drop of hot water from the water heater). Still, it was nice. It didn't help the soreness in my muscles really, but that's kinda my fault for not cooling down yesterday.
Yesterday I did Tae Kwon Do again for the first time since my senior year of high school. Man do I have a lot of rust to work off. My stances aren't nearly as low or as stable as they used to be, and my conditioning is absolutely terrible. I guess that's what I get for not doing really anything athletic (save maybe DDR and snowboarding) in 3 years. Soreness hurts.
Martial arts are awesome though, and I love it. What's better is that I get to train for free over the summer, as the newly instituted Tae Kwon Do club decided to give people their first semester for free. Also, $75 bucks a semester is not bad either when fall rolls around. The only thing I really have to pay for are the pants and sparring gear that got stolen. That was my fault - I left my old school for a couple of months before coming to pick them up. Should've known better, but when I left the school because I ran out of funds to train, I was kind of ashamed to show my face in there again.
Anyway yeah, I'm going to learn a lot this semester, and between the grappling in the curriculum, and learning from a black belt in Brazilian Ju Jitsu that just joined, I'll finally figure out what to do in close in a fight. Since 90% of fights end up on the ground, and Tae Kwon Do is strictly strikes and sparring with very limiting rules and pads, that kind of training will come in handy. This guy Aaron who is a black belt in Ju Jitsu knows a lot of Muay Thai as well as Ju Jitsu and wrestling. He wants to be a UFC fighter someday, and trains by fighting full contact with no pads. So, with all of these resources at my disposal, I have no excuse but to get stronger. This kid is training for a fight in September, but I realize that I should be training with the same determination. I very well may have a fight in September, but if I do, it won't be scheduled; It will just happen that I have to defend myself or someone else, just like that. I have to be ready too, just in case.
I'm off to cook some chicken/broccoli/cheese casserole and some cheesy clam dip before the Pistons game. Maybe I'll sneak in a game or two of Halo as well. Till next time...
