Not only have I apparently missed the whole Scissor Sisters phenomenon (never mind all the other music phenomenons I've missed out on), but their rendition (included lovingly on Cory's 2004 mix) of "Comfortably Numb" makes me want to hurt someone.
fauxbear has already badgered me for this opinion, but I hear it, and I think the same thing I think about Korn's recent version of "Another Brick In the Wall"--it takes the original spirit of the song and stomps all over it. It just didn't seem right at all. Plus (the part he really mocks me about), I generally thing remakes are annoying, unnecessary things.
I can see what you're saying about "Another Brick.." because I love the original.
The Scissors version of Comfortably Numb didn't seem less spirited or to be stomping on the original. I've heard both versions and I think it's a wonderful rendition that breathes some vibrance into (let's face it) Pink Floyd's downtempo original version. Plus, SS got Pink Floyd's blessing when Roger Waters and David Gilmour heard it.
I understand how you feel about covers though and it matches how I feel to a certain extent. It's all in how it's done and the sincerity of it. I don't believe for one minute that Hilary Duff and her little sister did the Go-Go's "Our Lips Are Sealed" because they've loved that song since they were shitting in their pants.
I feel bad for anyone that just doesn't "get" Scissor Sisters. Music hasn't been this much fun since 1987. There's no such thing as music that appeals to absolutely everyone, but I personally can say that Babydaddy and Co. have renewed my interest in music. Who knows how many thousand cd's I have... funny that their album is the one that I chose to listen to more than any other this year. They are a breath of fresh air in this world of corporate complaint rock and rap crap that litter the charts and airwaves.
I've never heard the original version of "Comfortably Numb." I just don't have any interest in it at all. For me, Scissor Sisters IS the original version.
I think I've ever only heard like 2 Pink Floyd songs and they both put me to sleep. When I got that original Scissor Sisters promo e.p. a year or so ago and it said "originally recorded by Pink Floyd", I thought "Like I have time to listen to a Pink Floyd cover!" As it turns out, I had all the time in the world.
