How to churn out more scientists.

Wow. How long has it been since I posted up here? Don't answer that... I know it's been several months. I've been busy ok? You try squeezing in free time while taking care of a 4 month old, a 9 year old, and a hurting wife (stupid freakin' arthritis)... plus cooking. It ain't easy I tell you. Still, I do find time to get online, and I ( Read more... )

....true.

On the other hand, though, as a college student who's majoring in a Humanities field, it really pisses me off that the government is giving special grants to students just for majoring in Math or Science. They're trying to push the science angle in the ways they know how to, but it's certainly not enough to make a difference. It is definitely enough to piss Arts and Humanities majors off, however; it's so much easier to do something people will hate you for than to do something that will endear someone to your cause. ^^;

On a purely selfish level, it irks me. Especially since I really don't want to find a job right now. I've gotten horribly used to lazing around. XD

America seems to be falling behind everyone nowadays, though, in all things excepting brute force and really shitty television. I think we as a people have very little drive to better ourselves as intelligent beings. Just a dastardly strong drive to better ourselves monetarily. When you think about it, so many things about our culture are just fucked up and ( ... )

As stupid as this is going to sound, I actually agree with Robert Heinlein's theory of cultural degeneration that he uses in his SciFi novels--the first sign of a dying culture is (pardon my little spoiler here if you haven't read his novel Friday before, something I highly recommend doing, I think you'd enjoy his take on humanity) rudeness. America no longer has values. We don't cherish manners or respect or intelligence or advancement anymore unless it pertains to the business of money-making. People get commended for finding the easy way out, for playing the system, for 'putting one over The Man' (god, how childish does that sound, right? Like our government is even that oppressive and horrible in relation to the rest of the world's governments). We encourage spying and intruding privacy because we think we've some sort of right to know everyone else's secrets and what time celebrities stop for gas or take a piss every day--but of course it's a terrible, unjust, invasive crime should anyone return the favor. You go to high school ( ... )

For the record, though, I never much thought about the effect of religion in that sense, since I don't think much of religion other than it being the key to unlock never-before-seen levels of stubbornness and blindness to reason and morbidly interesting mythology, so I never really considered what you mentioned. It does make a lot of sense now that I think about it, though, but I suppose it's one of those things that you dismiss because it's been there so bloody long you don't even see it anymore--not really, anyhow.

Also, LJ keeps cutting me off for exceeding the size limit of a comment. That's the first time I've had that happen to me! :D I feel incredibly vindicated and accomplished, for some reason. Okay. I'm going to shut up now, as I'm sure if you actually sat and read all of that shite, you're probably about ready to shoot me just to make me stop. :D;;; Did I mention I'm also feeling particularly annoying today? ^_^;
