A great many things that are part and parcel of modern society are dangerous to us and the environment. Microwaves and other radiation. Petrochemicals, including plastic. Heavy metals like lead, chromium, and mercury. Scads of organic chemicals. And we wonder why cancer is so prevalent despite our efforts to beat it. Why don't we see the connection? Because those things make our material lives easier, cheaper, more "enjoyable"?
It's as though someone went back in time to the Roman Empire and told them that the lead they were so widely using was driving them mad, decreasing their fertility, creating birth defects, and hastening the end of their way of life, and they replied, "So? It's cheap and easy. We need it"
