Insane

I thought it'd be nice to post my progress of researching audism:

I have been doing a lot of reading, it is insane. Right now, I am highlighting important information in Harlan Lane's Mask of Benevolence. The book is, supposedly, the earliest record of a published work containing the concept and the word of Audism. Keep in mind this is published in 1992.

The earlier version comes from Humphries' unpublished dissertation; hence, the reason why it has a rather insignificant value to the research. Published works, in my opinion, allow room for criticism and improvement. Humphries did not do that, therefore he cannot have the credit he should deserve.

after reading a lot of stuff I've decided on a definite definition of Audism:

(noun) an act of prejudice or discrimination against an individual or a group based on their audiological abilities.

I know that the definition will not be approved by everyone in the deaf community; however, earlier definitions seem to be flimsy, "Audism is defined as an attitude based on pathological thinking which results in a negative stigma towards anyone who does not hear; like racism or sexism, audism judges, labels and limits individuals on the basis of whether a person hears and speak." (Humphrey and Alcorn, 1995:85)

Since audism is being compared to sexism and racism, I felt that it was rather important to look up the meaning of those words. For sexism--discriminatory or abusive behavior towards members of the opposite sex and for racism--the prejudice that members of one race are intrinsically superior to members of other races. (ask.com). Since both definitions did not target a specific audience, audism should follow the same suit as an discrimination based on audiological abilities rather than hearing against deaf.

I've defined the word now I'm taking it apart. . .

Feedbacks are more than welcome!
