why i love kanye west and other thoughts about the politics of the disaster
This morning in my communications class, we were discussing topics relevant to chapter one, which was basic communications and conversations and speeches. My professor showed us this clip from this tela-thon MSNBC did friday night. It was kanye west talking and he made the statement "president bush doesn't care about black people." first of all, holy shit! that was awesome. i love a person who probably does tell it like it is. second of all, major brownie points to mike meyers (who was standing beside him) for keeping a straight face. i am sure he could have easily gone after president asshole as well.
i hate to say it, but i think mr. west is only repeating what has been on many people's minds. I'm not sure if bush really is a racist, but it does bring up question to why so much was delayed. because now that i think about it more, if this was a community of mainly white people - example probably one of the hurricans that hit florida last year, you never saw people waiting for days for help. but in this case, you did. and even though a friend of mine said that he did see a white person on the roof of their house waiting for help, i never saw anything like that on the news or in the media. the only people i saw suffering were african americans. (of course, i'm talking about new orleans) those who are white that i saw on tv were from mississippi. and lucky for them, they were able to escape, however they too lost everything. no matter what color you are, all loss because of this disaster is just as important. i'm just questioning why it took so long for anything to happen!
with all this disaster stuff happening, it seems like it's more than just race. it's also a class issue. the poverty down south is horrific. so maybe bush is against the poor as well, which would make sense because he was born into money and would have no idea what it's like to have nothing.
