008 - Weeks

“Here,” Shunrei handed him a bowl of warm soup, careful as to not spill a drop. “You need to eat to feel better.”

Shiryu nodded and picked up the spoon with his left hand. His right arm was wrapped in bandages, a piece of wood keeping it straight. There were bruises and scratches all over his chest, visible under the purple jacket that rested loosely on his shoulders. The left side of his face was swollen and wounds that would become scars lied on other parts of his body. Shunrei had been unable to contain a sound of horror as she saw the boy limping back to the cabin, falling to the ground just a few meters before he arrived.

The young girl dipped a piece of cloth into the bowl with fresh water and cleaned the caked blood from Shiryu’s face. Under the dirt, even more scratches appeared.

“Master believes you can do it,” she said with a smile and moved the hair away from his face, so it didn’t fall into the soup. The spoon stopped midway between the bowl and Shiryu’s mouth. He turned his gaze towards her and, even when his eyes were only half visible due to the bandages and the swell, she could see his exhaustion. He had already thought of giving up.

“I believe you can do it,” she reassured him. Though her frame was delicate and her hands had a nervous grip on the cloth in her hands, twisting and pulling it, her voice was firm.

“Shunrei, I…”

“So please… Please don’t leave!” She bowed her head as her tone raised, her long braid falling over her shoulder. “Please don’t leave us.”

Shiryu moved his hand again after an awkward silence settled between them, one spoon after the other coming into his mouth. “This soup is really good.”

Shunrei nodded, but she didn’t lift her face. She didn’t want for Shiryu to see her cry, yet again. But if Shiryu left…

“I know you have been here for a short time only, but I…”

“I wouldn’t give up so easily,” Shiryu replied as he set the bowl aside. He pushed himself to his feet, his steps wobbly as he reached her. Even when the pain didn’t allow him to stand straight, he still had to look down to meet her eyes. “I wouldn’t leave you both so easily.”

As the children shared a smile, they missed Dohko’s presence in the cabin’s entrance. Smiling to himself, the old master retreated back to his usual place by the waterfall.

Five weeks.

He never thought it would take such a short time for them to become a family.

009 - Months

Ten months aren’t enough for Hyoga to grow used to the training. Again and again he falls, unable to stand the gusts of cold Isaac sends his way. Camus watches from afar and though Isaac pleads with his eyes to stop the match, he keeps the spar going. Maybe this will be the day when Hyoga defeats the other boy, he thinks, seeing a spark of cosmo surrounding the child’s hands.

But when he sees Hyoga on his hands and knees on the snow, the blood that runs down his arms leaving red spots on the white below him, Camus knows it won’t happen this day.

He signals for the children to stop and go back home. Both nod in unison and walk the path that leads to the cabin, Hyoga falling back with each step. With a sigh, Isaac leans him on his shoulder and carries the exhausted boy the rest of the way.

Camus has waited for ten months and the hints of power he has seen in Hyoga still don’t become the bright cosmo he wishes to see. It’s obvious that it’s not just time what the boy needs to become stronger, but the confidence in himself and his own strength.

His eyes fixed on the boys in the distance, Camus renews his oath. Before a year passes, he will make a warrior of the child that cries at night for his mother.
