Stand and Deliver
So, my ambition to get episode 1x17 of The Good Wife recapped by the end of last week was totally derailed by my falling back in love with Ashes to Ashes. I finished the series this morning, and now have a lot of feelings. Spoilers, obvsly.
Firstly, I'm so sad it's over! I have enjoyed this series SO MUCH that it got to the point where I didn't want them to wrap things up; I just wanted to watch Gene, Alex, Ray, Chris and Shaz doing their thing forever. I'm completely in love with the 80s world that they created. Keeley Hawes's outfits, especially in season 3, were spectacular. Love, love, love.
I want that brooch. I want it so bad!
Speaking of wanting things... Gene & Alex!!! God I've missed chemistry on screen like theirs. You just want them to yell at each other, then make out like crazy. Delicious. In 3x07 when they went on their date, then slow danced in her apartment, I swear my heart was in my mouth. I was practically yelling at the screen for Alex to ignore the door. I was so hoping there'd be a way for she and Gene to end up together, but I wasn't counting on it, and I felt that their ending was the best it could have been, really. So sad though. I'm not gonna lie, I totally cried into my pillow after the episode ended, and then couldn't find the will to get out of bed. Ha.
Actually did not see Alex's death coming at all. That was pretty neat. Although the coolest twist of the episode (other than Gene turning out to be a sort of limbo ferryman and the subsequent revelation of the tragic deaths of all the team) was totally Jim Keats turning out to be THE DEVIL!! Damn! Daniel Mays can be pretty freaking scary when he wants to. I got ridiculously sad when I realised this means Viv is in Hell. Not cool, guys! Really not cool.
Overall, I was very satisfied with the end, especially the way they wrapped up Sam and Annie's fates. I had been displeased with all the "Sam Tyler is dead" talk, it felt like cheating - to have such a beloved character pronounced dead offscreen. So to know that he and Annie had a great life with Gene, then went together into the afterlife makes my heart so happy. God I've never gotten over those two and their adorableness.
Can't believe Shaz was from the 90s! And Ray being from the 1950s of course made so much sense, what with Shaz accusing him of having all the sensibilities of a 50s man. I like the concept that they'd all been there so long, they had forgotten their pasts and where they were - including Gene forgetting his role and his place in that limbo world. You could totally see it happening with Alex too, the way that by season 3 she wasn't as rabidly trying to get back to Molly; but had calmed down and settled in quite a bit. Aw man, now I'm going to get all emo again knowing there won't be anymore of Gene & Bolly bickering, taking collars and flirting in their own special way.
Most of all though, I am going to miss Bolly herself. Alex Drake has such confidence and schoolmarm swagger, I just love her to bits. Trying not to think about the fact she's never getting home to her daughter. Too freaking sad.
