Moving Sucks.

I have to move. I really don't want to. It sucks.

It all started a few weeks ago in mid-May. Around 7:30AM one peaceful morning, we heard BANG! BANG! THUMP! THUMP! up on our roof. We looked outside and found there were people working on the roof, which was strange since we hadn't heard anything from the apartment manager about it. Well, later that day, we found a letter on our door that apologized for the lack of warning. The letter said that the building had been sold and they were going to be doing some improvements to it. We were a bit worried about the fact that the building had been sold; did this mean there was going to be a rent increase? Well, it actually turned out to be much worse than that.

A couple days later, we got another letter that said that the apartment complex is going to be turned into condominiums, so unless we wanted to buy our unit (for over $200,000....yeah, right! No matter how much they improve the units, they'll never be worth that!) we would need to move out. This letter included information about how long it would take for them to get the necessary permits to turn the place in condos (saying stuff like how there would be a 120 day period before the request was approved, and a 60 day period in which to decide whether we wished to buy our unit), so it seemed like we had a while to search for a new place. We even started considering looking at buying a house, since both of our sets of parents had been saying that it's better to be paying for something that will eventually be yours rather than just paying to live in a place you'll never own.

A few days later, I found a notice in the mailbox that said we had a certified letter to pick up at the post office. Crap. So we went to pick it up, and the guy at the post office commented on how there were a lot of these letters for people in the same apartment complex. Double crap. So we open it up, and yes, it was an 30-day eviction notice, saying we needed to be out of the apartment by June 17th (though it comes with a three days extension to include the time to mail it, but we didn't actually get the notice until May 25th).

So now we have a little over a week until we need to be out....and we still don't have an apartment. We had to scrap the house buying plans for now, since there's no way we could do that in just three weeks. We've been trying to check out various apartments around the area with little success....a couple of times I've called about a place, and find out it was just rented to someone else, other places are available but don't accept cats, others are on busy streets (we don't want to risk having our cat get run over). Nothing has come through yet, and it's really worrying me. And we're also looking at a pretty big rent increase: we're paying $505 for our current place, and places that are simlar in size and location are going for $700 or more. Granted, I just got a raise at work, and Josh has a job now, so it shouldn't be too big of a burden financially, but still, I just don't want to deal with it.

This isn't the first time we've had to move. The apartment Josh and I first lived it was in the same complex as this one, and after living there for about a year we were told we would have to move because the apartment wasn't "legal" (something about how the bedroom is on the inside of the building, and since the bedroom had no windows there was no escape from it if there was a fire or something). So we had to move from that apartment to an empty unit within the same complex (we got a pretty good deal: the previous apartment was 1 bedroom, and this one has 2, but they didn't raise our rent). But now we have to move out of this one, too. I'm pissed that I have to move for the thrid time in two years.

So we've started packing our stuff, but we don't know where the hell we're going to go with it. Of course, we can always stay with our parents if we really need to, but I really don't want to have to resort to that. I'm just hoping something works out in the next couple of days, because it's really stressing me out (and I can't have time off work to deal with it, since my manager is currently dealing with moving woes of her own, and has taken some time off herself).

Gah, just make this go away!
