Burning Bridges

The concept of “burning bridges” has been fascinating to me because it’s such a complex social construct. It’s not just the simple act of doing something that severs contact with another party, damaging the relationship so it’s irreparable. There’s a lot of social hierarchy and power involved.

People in power do not burn bridges.

People in power can indeed afford to be rude and burn bridges. However, each of us is in a position of power over someone else--does that mean we should go burning bridges willy-nilly? I think it's interesting that you don't think you have power here, when I suspect you have a much broader following online and in real life than this person does. One word from you could put a real black mark on this person's business and reputation. So I have to commend you for being honorable and choosing not to exercise that power, even though you could burn that bridge ( ... )

Thanks lady. You've got a lot of class. I know that I could probably wreck some havoc with my listeners, but you're right: I wouldn't do that.

The thing about bridges is sometimes they don't stay burned. Should you become more famous or more important, people suddenly find themselves willing to pretend none of the burning happened.

It's not like integrity's involved here with those people. Just games.

I did that once at work. There was a group that I always fought battles with over the application that I supported. In particular I fought with this guy that looked much like Mr Garrison from South Park and never wanted to listen to advice from people that actually used the tool on a daily basis ( ... )
