So, I've been wondering... what makes fanart "good"?

I would not consider myself anywhere near being a "good" fanartist... but you know there's those times when you look at someone's work and think: "Why is this popular?" (no, I won't provide examples, that's mean and everyone's views are different ( Read more... )

I know I have liked some fanart that even I thought "it's not that well drawn but I really like the idea" or because I thought it was funny, cute, etc ( ... )

If I am going to like an save a piece of fanart, it has to be well-done. I generally don't save work that leans too far toward the "anime" style; I prefer a good degree of realism, though they don't have to be photo-realistic. I like and save art that one can tell was drawn by someone with an artistic background, someone who understands anatomy, color theory, composition, etc. A stiff picture of a character in front of a monochromatic background is not going to cut it for me ( ... )

the only thing about the manga that bothers me at times are the length of the legs and the hands/fingers haha everything else is a-okay.

it's okay if you're picky, I just think it's interesting to know what different people look for anyway.

I prefer really well drawn fanart over concept. Often times when I do stumble upon a poor piece of artwork, but the concept is amazing, I always wish it were executed by someone more talented, or perhaps the artist would redo it at a later time after a lot of practice. I'm really, really selective when it comes to fan art, because most of the time, the art I see I just really don't like, whether it's the concept, the execution or just simply the artists style.... But when i do find fan artists that do a wonderful job, i love it.

I agree for the most part... but there are some people like myself who have an idea they love but don't want to pay an artist to do it... well for me, I usually don't want to pay for fanart... it's not that I don't always think it's "worth" it, but there's always that "what if I don't like it" factor, too...

I feel the most important things are the person's ability to draw, their subject matter and how they conveyed their idea across. An out-of this world drawing of Princess Serenity starring at a brick wall will be boring as heck. A nicely drawn Princess Serenity looking over the lunar landscape (or another landscape) is so much better. Sure the first picture had a kick ass drawing, but failed to engage the viewer. The second picture didn't have art as good as the first, but it was still fairly decent and it carried an idea across to the viewer.

disclaimer: There were no particular pictures in mind that I wrote about in my examples. I solely thought to point out two extremes.

If it is well executed even that can be interesting I suppose.

haha I agree, though I have trouble making BGs the few times I do try to draw... ^^; I just don't make the time for any of my hobbies like I used to so I'm probably terrible at all of them lol
