Spoilers for tonight's episode of "The Following" under the cut. This was episode 1.13.
Pretty solid episode! I don't have as many complaints as usual. It was entertaining seeing everything Joe has built up begin to crumble around him, since he built it all by manipulating people he couldn't care less about. I'm a little disappointed that Roderick died, but it was understandable after what he did. It wasn't like he could ever go back to the cult house after that. I was just hoping he'd somehow be around next season to still be an arrogant, smug little bastard. He wore it well. :) Kind of amused that his real name was "Tim." Such an intimidating name. NOT. :D
There was a lot of satisfying behavior in the ep, with Joe burning bridges left and right as he unravels. I was even impressed with Claire's manipulation of Jacob and then Joe until she stabbed Joe in the side. I'm perplexed over what she was hoping to accomplish with that move. I mean, okay, Joey was out of the cult house and safe, so she could make a move, but if she was going to stab Joe, why didn't she stab to kill? If you're going to fuck yourself over like that, you might as well accomplish something. It just seemed like such a random thing to do. Was she trying to make him mad so he would kill her? Has she given up? If Claire had killed Joe, how would she then walk out of the house and to safety? Was there any plan here? I thought she might be getting a brain until that one. All Claire had to do was manipulate Joe to buy time until the FBI came to get her. It should have been obvious to her that the FBI was going to close in on the house after what happened with Roderick, and because of Ryan's promise of immunity to any cult member who came forward now and gave up Joe. Jacob has doubts, Emma has doubts, other cult members are afraid, it's only a matter of time. So why make such a move now? I just don't get Claire.
My main complaint besides Claire's perplexing actions is why didn't the FBI put handcuffs on the cult member who "gave herself up" at the end? And why wasn't she properly searched for anything that could be used to stab someone? Oh right, because the FBI in this show is boneheaded and fumbles anything they can to make Carroll's cult look like geniuses. The writers needed Asshole Head FBI Guy out of the way for the last 2 episodes of the season, is why they didn't handcuff her or take away her stabby stabby toy. 9_9
Oh! I liked the trick they pulled on Roderick, when Ryan made it look like he was springing him to rescue Joey. I truly didn't realize it was a trick at all until Parker was shown out in the car. I thought Ryan had lost his fucking mind. Ya got me, "The Following"!
Now, let's see how much I care about the threat on Claire's life... hm, not much at all! Okay, Joey needs his mother, I don't want her to die, not really... but if she did, I don't think it would affect me much.
