I have just watched one of the most bizarre movies I have ever seen. And that's saying something.
It is called "V/H/S." Warning for LOTS of gore and horror elements and asshole frat boy mentality in some of the characters. Full frontal nudie bits too. The movie is also very loud at times, so be prepared to turn the volume up and down as necessary. But if you like horror and especially found footage horror, you may find a lot to love about it.
The basic premise is that these crooks are hired to break into a house to retrieve a videotape. They are not told what's on the tape they need to get, just that they'll "know it when [they] find it." Of course, there are many videotapes. One guy is told to stay in this room with a pile of tapes and a vcr/tv setup while the others go collect tapes from elsewhere in the house. It's pretty much the only smart idea these guys have, to gather up the tapes and leave and go through them later. As you could expect, the one guy who's alone can't resist watching some of the tapes. And here we have our story.
The tapes appear to be various bizarre incidents that people have captured on film. Whoever owns this house has somehow collected the tapes. The incidents involve monsters, murders, cults, some weird alien-like creatures, all very familiar stuff, but there's this whole feeling of originality to it all that I rarely feel while watching movies. The segment with the alien/ghost things spooked me so bad that I had to go check my hall closet for them. (If I don't keep the door ajar at all times, it gets really musty in there, a side effect of this apartment being old and crappy. Passing by that slightly open door after watching a girl deal with her "haunted" apartment was a little too much for me.)
I think my favorite thing about the movie besides the feeling of "Wow, this is so bizarre and original, WTF just happened?" is the open-endedness. There are so many questions left unanswered. Sometimes, that kind of thing really bothers me because I like to get an explanation at some point, but in this case, the unanswered questions only left things open for your imagination to fill in the blanks and run wild. I enjoyed that.
I know one fandom I'm nominating for next year's
yuletide!
Kaye! Don't watch this. I'm bringing it next time I come out there.
