Gordon sat at his desk looking shell-shocked. Bruce had noted a coffee pot sitting on top of a file cabinet. He started a pot, making it extra strong. Then Bruce began to pick up the office. He was about done when the phone rang.
"Gordon" the Commissoner answered. A long silence followed. Then "I want a written report and statements from everyone on my desk by ten a.m. tomorrow. Thank you," he said, and hung up the phone.
"The Joker is still there," he said, raising his eyes up to meet Bruce's. For the first time, they were filled with something besides pain. Gordon's eyes had hope in them. "We have a copy cat. Maybe my family has a chance. Can you find out if those pictures were doctored? We could do it here, but I don't trust the people down in the labs."
"Of course. With Wayne Enterprises' computers, it would probably take Lucius twenty minutes top. What about the arsons?"
"Three cells were empty. Two were heavy hitters for the Marcone family. I am thinking they have Barb and the kids. One of the investigations I have been heading over at MCU was almost ready to bring down a large portion of that family. The other was a man by the name of Ivan Johnson. He truely is insane. A pyromaniac. I arrested him about 5 years ago. I am guessing Ivan is working with the Marcones."
"Let me check some sources tonight," Bruce replied. "My gut tells me that if it is the Marcones, they are trying to divert your interest while something big goes down. I hate to ask this of you, but can you go to Arkham? Make sure he truely is still there?"
"I was thinking the same thing."
"Wait till night. When I can go with you. I am still concerned for your safety."
Jim nodded in agreement, then leaned back tiredly in his chair. He stared at the ceiling for a moment, his eyes drifting closed. He opened them again at the smell of strong coffee. He reached up and grasped the cup of hot coffee Bruce was holding under his nose.
"Drink this," the billionaire ordered. "Then, meet me down in the parking garage. I think we will make that trip to Wayne Enterprises, and then get some rest before tonight. I get the feeling that it is all going to reach an end tonight."
"I can get a hotel room," Gordon protested.
"No. I want you some where I know you will be safe." With that, Bruce turned on his heel and walked out the Commish's office door.
"Even without the suit, he still has to have it his way," Gordon muttered as he sipped his coffee. After a second cup, he sighed heavily, gathered together some files and followed Wayne down to the parking garage.
Ok, I decided to completely change direction. I decided that maybe we didn't need the Joker to come out and play right now. However the trip to Arkham to double check sould be quite unsettling (next chapter). If anyone has any suggestions, now it proper time. And to be honest, as someone else said, alot of us burned Gordon's house down in our stories within a couple of days of each other. It is definitly a great plot device, but now I wish I had restrained. I don't want this to be along the same lines as anyone else's. Rather it is intentional or not. Probably won't post again for a few nights. Have to think more on where to take this. Thanks for reading though, both the chapter and my rambling thougths on the story.
